December 16, 2012, turned out to be a nightmare for India after a 23-year-old woman (named Nirbhaya) was gang-raped on a moving bus in Delhi. The victim was severely injured and received treatment at a hospital in Singapore. However, she succumbed to her injuries while receiving the treatment.

The horrifying incident raised some serious questions about women’s safety in India. Candle marches and protests were held across the nation demanding justice for Nirbhaya. The seven culprits Ram Singh (30), Vinay Sharma (28), Mukesh (34), Akshay Thakur (36), Pawan Gupta (27), Juvenile, were nabbed by the Delhi police.

Cut to March 20, 2020, the victim got justice after 8 years of legal proceedings. As December 16, 2021 marks 9 years of the Nirbhaya gang-rape case, here’s a look at how the victim got justice.

2012

• December 16: Nirbhaya and her guy friend got inside a bus at Delhi’s Munerka bus stand. Six men and a juvenile brutally gang-raped the victim and thrashed her friend. They, later, threw both of them naked out of the bus near Aerocity.
• December 18-22: Delhi police arrested the culprits.
• December 29: Nirbhaya dies due to internal injuries caused during the rape.

2013

• March 11: One of the culprits Ram Singh dies by suicide in Delhi’s Tihar jail.
  September 1: The juvenile, who also committed the crime, was transferred to a reformatory for 3 years by Juvenile Justice Board (JJB).
• September 13: The culprits were charged with the death penalty by the Fast Track Court (FTC).

2014

• March 13: Delhi High Court confirms the death penalty to all four convicts.

2017

• May 5: The Supreme Court approves the death penalty.
• November 8: Mukesh filed a review petition in the Supreme Court.
• December 15: Pawan and Vinay plead for review of the Supreme Court’s verdict.

2018

• July 9: Supreme Court dismissed review pleas of Vinay, Pawan, and Mukesh.

2019

• February: Nirbhaya’s parents moved to the trial court and demanded the death penalty for all the four culprits.
• December 10: Akshay sought a review of his death penalty and moved to SC.
• December 13: The victim’s mother moved to the Supreme Court and opposed the review plea of Akshay.
• December 18: Akshay’s review plea was dismissed.
• December 19: Delhi High Court dismissed Pawan’s plea and claimed that he was a juvenile when the crime was committed.

2020

• January 7: Trial court orders to hang all four convicts on January 22, 2020, and signed death black warrants.
• January 14: Supreme Court rejected the curative petition of Mukesh and Vinay. Later, Mukesh filed a mercy petition before President Ram Nath Kovind.
• January 17: The President rejected the mercy plea and the trial court issued death warrants and an execution date on February 1, 2020.
• January 31: SC rejects curative plea filed by Akshay on January 29 and then trial court postponed the death sentence for the second time.
• March 2: The Supreme Court dismissed PIL seeking direction on organ donation by all the four convicts.
• March 16: All the four convicts move to the International Court of Justice.
• March 19: Supreme Court rejects the petition of death row convict Pawan against the rejection of his mercy plea by the President of India and stood on execution.
• March 20: All the four convicts were hanged till death at 5:30 am and their deaths were confirmed at 6:00 am.
