The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested Punjabi actor-turned activist Deep Sidhu. According to the police, Sidhu was found provoking the protesting farmers during the rally, which resulted in violence at the Red Fort on Republic Day.

Deep Sidhu, an accused in the 26th January violence case has been arrested, news agency ANI reported citing Delhi Police Special Cell as saying.

The police had last week announced a cash award of Rs 1 lakh on the 36-year old in exchange of information about him and his two accomplices. Following the violence at Red Fort, multiple raids were conducted by the police searching for Sidhu. The investigating agencies have so far arrested over 122 people and registered 44 FIRs in the matter.

On 26 January, several farmers protesting against the Centre’s farm laws were seen climbing the Red Fort and placing a Sikh religious flag during the tractor parade. It also led to violent clashes with police which left many policemen injured. Sidhu was spotted standing among the protesters in various video clips and photographs.

However, several factions of the farmers have accused Sidhu of plotting a conspiracy and attempting to derail their movement.

Over the past few days, Sidhu was seen uploading videos defending himself in the case. On his facebook page, he uploaded two videos, claiming that people on their own marched towards the Red Fort from all the Delhi borders on Republic Day.

He also accused farmer leaders of backtracking on their protests. Many people took the other route not decided by the farmer leaders who were arrogant and wanted that decisions took by them should be accepted by all, he had said.

The 36-year-old also slammed the farmers saying that if he was being labeled gaddar (traitor), then all farmer leaders are gaddars (traitors).

Earlier, Sidhu along with his brother, Mandeep Singh, were summoned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a case filed against the Sikhs For Justice.

The Delhi Police on Wednesday announced Rs 1 lakh cash reward on providing information on actor Deep Sidhu, his two associates, Gurjot Singh, Gurjant Singh, and Juraj Singh who have been accused of hoisting the Nishan Sahib, a religious flag at the Red Fort complex on Republic Day amid the farmers’ protest.

The police have also announced Rs.50,000 reward for any information that could lead to arrest four others, Sukhdev Singh, Iqbal Singh, Jagbir Singh and Buta Singh for their alleged involvement in the January 26 violence.

The move came a day after the Centre informed Parliament that farmers during the tractor rally in the national capital on January 26 had indulged in vandalising property, rioting and resorting to criminal force against the Delhi police. 

The multiple raids in Delhi and Punjab are being conducted by the police to look for the accused who participated in the violent clashes between police and farmers during the Republic Day tractor march. Till date, a total of 122 persons were arrested and 44 FIRs have been registered in connection with a violence during the tractor march.

Cases against journalists and others, including Congress MP Shashi Tharoor have also been filed for allegedly misleading people over a farmer’s death during the protest in Delhi ITO’s area.

On Republic Day, a tractor rally by protesting farmers went rogue as they broke off their designated route and schedule. Hundreds of protestors stormed at the Red Fort with wielding sticks, holding the tricolour and union flags, and clashed with police. They climbed the ramparts and placed a Sikh religious flag.  Police then resorted to firing tear gas and lathi charges to regain control.

However, the farmer union leaders have alleged a conspiracy to derail their movement and have blamed Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu for leading the conspiracy.

Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu has come under scrutiny for his role in violent clashes that erupted during farmers’ tractor rally on Republic day. Farmers have accused him of hoisting the Nishan Sahib, the sikh religious flag near the tricolor at the Red Fort. This act has sparked outrage and drawn criticism from across the nation. The social media is flooded with photos and videos of the armed protesters storming the 400-year-old Mughal monument. Sidhu was last seen at Red fort which became the epicenter of the chaos that shook the national capital. The actor is known to be close to movie star-turned-BJP MP Sunny Deol.

In defence of the act, Sidhu posted a video on facebook on Tuesday evening saying the protesters did not remove the national flag but put up the Nishan Sahib as a symbolic protest. He also claimed that it was a spontaneous act.

He said the Nishan Sahib flag was hoisted and slogans of Kisan Mazdoor Ekta were raised at the Red fort to symbolically register the farmers’ protest against the new contentious farm laws. It represented the country’s unity in diversity. He asserted that the national flag was not removed from the flagpole at the Red Fort.

He defended the act saying such anger was natural in a mass movement when the genuine rights of people are ignored. The protesters did not go to Delhi to hurt anyone or damage public property. The farmers have exercised their democratic right peacefully for so long. Holding one person responsible for such a big mobilisation of people will be wrong, Sidhu added.

The actor-activist came into the spotlight as an aide of Sunny Deol when he contested elections from Gurdaspur in Punjab in 2019. Deol has since disassociated himself from Sidhu. Yesterday, Sunny Deol posted another statement saying the Red Fort incident has saddened him. He made it clear on December 6, that neither he nor his family have anything to do with Deep Sidhu.

Meanwhile, Samkyukt Kisan Morcha alleged that some anti social elements had infiltrated their peaceful movement.
