Right-wing Hindutva outfit Bharat Hindu Mahasabha members allegedly slaughtered cows themselves in a bid to trigger communal violence during Ram Navami processions in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra, the state police said on Saturday.

According to reports, four young men were arrested by the Agra Police in a case of cow slaughter on the occasion of Ram Navami.

An India Today report quoting a senior police officer said that four accused were arrested in a raid during Ram Navami celebrations in Gautam Nagar area of Agra’s Etmaduddaula, adding that investigation has revealed names of several office bearers of Bharat Hindu Mahasabha who were allegedly involved in the cow slaughter plot to incite communal violence.

The report, quoting information provided by the Uttar Pradesh Police, revealed that Hindu Mahasabha national spokesperson Sanjay Jat has emerged as being the main conspirator behind the plot, besides several other workers of the right-wing Hindutva group.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Suraj Rai said that based on a complaint by Hindu Mahasabha’s Jitendra Kushwaha, an FIR regarding cow slaughter was registered at Agra’s Etmaduddaula police station and two accused, identified as Imran alias Thakur and Shanu, who were named in the FIR, were arrested by the cops.

The senior officer said that during investigation, many revelations were made such as the claim made by one of the arrested men, Shanu, that Jitendra Kushwaha had allegedly knew about the Hindutva outfit’s plot to disrupt communal harmony on Ram Navami by ordering slaughter of cows by its workers and henchmen.

Giving details, the officer said that Shanu told the police that on March 29, he found Imran, Salman and Sairo at Mehtab Bagh and together they slaughtered a cow roaming there at around 8 pm. The detained man said he and Imran, the other person named in the FIR, then informed Kushwaha about the incident.

As per reports, some Hindu Mahasabha workers complained against Jitendra Kushwaha and Sanjay Jat for allegedly conspiring to trigger communal violence in Agra by slaughtering cows on Ram Navami.

However, Sanjay Jat, while trashing the allegations and batting for a CBCID probe, has claimed that officer bearers of the Bharat Hindu Mahasabha have deliberately entrapped him.

Jat said he will approach Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to complaint against the tainted officials.

With recovery time stretching on for up to 12 days, the government hospitals are facing the shortage of beds and shifted to the Covid ward.

The suspected dengue outbreak in Firozabad has prompted the Uttar Pradesh government to set up an inquiry as most of the city area has come under the grip of viral fever, dengue and malaria. Hundreds of children are being affected.

Dr L K Gupta, child specialist at the medical college, said most of the children are suffering from viral fever and some are testing positive for dengue infection.

With 186 people currently in hospital and the high number of affected children, district magistrate Chandra Vijay Singh has ordered closure of both government-run and private schools for Classes 1-8 till September 6.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited Firozabad Tuesday and said teams would be formed to confirm the cause of the deaths. Directions have been issued to ensure adequate manpower at the medical college, he said.
