Protesting farmers’ Unions, who have stuck to their demand for a complete repeal of all three agri-laws, are now ready to return to the negotiation table a day after PM Narendra Modi said the government is ready to hold fresh round of talks on farmers issues. Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar described farm Unions decision as good step on Sunday and expressed hope that a solution would be found to end farmers agitation over the new farm laws. The farmers’ unions announced resumption of talk on Tuesday. Asked about the farm unions proposal of holding next round of talks, Tomar said talks will take place.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reaffirmed that the Centre has no intention of scrapping the minimum support price (MSP) in the new legislations and that no one can take away land from the farmers. Speaking on the occasion of the Jairam Thakur government in Himachal Pradesh completing three years, Rajnath Singh said there is major propaganda that the land of farmers would be taken away through contract farming. He assured that no no one can take away the land of the farmers. He also said farmers are free to sell their crops anywhere in India and if big corporates are gaining from farmers’ yield, they have to pay bonus to farmers.

The government has projected the laws as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove mandi system and middlemen and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers have argued that the new laws have no mention of minimum support price (MSP) and the mandis that will leave them at the mercy of big corporates. The farmers have laid siege to Delhi even as the government scrambles to find an amicable solution. They argue that they would settle for nothing less than total scrapping of the legislations, but now they have agreed to come at negotiation table.
