West Bengal’s Aliah University Vice-Chancellor was hackled and verbally abused on camera by a group of students over PhD merit list. A student who was leading the group has been arrested after the video of the incident went viral. The incident kicked up a political row in the state.

In the viral video, the students can be heard using cuss words and threatening Bengal’s Aliah University vice-chancellor Mahammad Ali with dire consequences if the PhD admission list was not changed as per their recommendations. Two security guards were standing silent behind Ali’s chair when the students continued to verbally abuse and shout at him. The vice-chancellor stays silent when he was heckled by a group of students. The heckling reportedly went on for hours.

A university official confirmed that the incident took place at the university’s New Town campus on Friday.

Explaining to the media about the incident, the Vice-Chancellor said Mondal and some others gheraoed him for a couple of hours inside his office and used foul language.  He had called up the police for help, but they did not come, Ali said.

Hours after the incident, the Bengal BJP alleged that the accused, Giasuddin Mondal, has links with the Trinamool Congress but the ruling party claimed that the was expelled from its students’ wing years ago. Mondal was expelled from the university in 2018. 

Seeking a report from the state’s chief secretary, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankad tweeted the video of the incident and said Such shameful incidents call for exemplary consequences. Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also said it shows how Trinamool’s student leaders have crossed all limits.

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari tweeted that this is not an isolated incident under the regime of Bengal’s daughter. This is the state’s culture now. In Bengal, it is expected that the police won’t arrest those who have hands of influential TMC leaders on their heads.

The CPI’s Sujan Chakraborty said the incident is another pointer to how the atmosphere in educational institutions has been vitiated under the Trinamool’s rule.

Later TMC’s students’ wing president said Trinankur Bhattacharya has condemned the incident saying that the VC’s abusers must be punished. The ruling party’s general secretary Kunal Ghosh also condemned such conduct towards teachers and demanded strict punishment for the guilty.
