A three-year-old girl who was critically injured and undergoing treatment following a road accident succumbed to her injuries on Monday. The accident happened on Saturday at around 6:45 am after an ambulance rammed a motorcycle on which they were sitting in Kerala’s Venjaramoodu.

According to the reports, the toddler, identified as Alankrita, hailed from Mudakkal’s Chempoor. She and her father went to a medical laboratory at Venjaramoodu when the ambulance, driven by a male nurse, hit the two-wheeler. Her father, Shibu, 58, died on the spot.

Reportedly, Shibu and his daughter were sitting on a bike outside a medical laboratory and were waiting to collect a test result when the ambulance, driven by Amal, rammed the motorcycle. Both of them sustained head injuries, while Shibu died on the spot, and Alankrita underwent emergency surgery, but she couldn’t survive.

The accident took place near Venjaramoodu Police Station. The ambulance, operated by Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Employees Credit Cooperative Society, was returning from Idukki to Thiruvananthapuram after transporting a patient after discharge.

Vineeth was at the wheel, but due to being exhausted after an overnight trip, he let the male nurse, Amal, drive the ambulance when they reached Kottayam. The police suspect that Amal might have fallen asleep during the incident.

Reportedly, Amal, however, is an experienced driver who frequently operates an ambulance. Nevertheless, the two were detained and charged with causing death by negligence under Section 304A of the Indian Penal Code. The ambulance has also been seized. The licenses of the male nurse and the ambulance driver were suspended by the Motor Vehicle Department (MVD).

However, they were later let off on station bail.
