A woman worker was killed and nearly 65 workers have been unconscious after Ammonia leakage in a meat factory in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. All the injured were taken to the JN Medical College, where they are undergoing treatment.

The incident caused panic among the Aligarh district administration, health employees of JNMCH and family members of the deceased workers who were employed in the packaging section of the meat factory.

A video of the incident is doing rounds on social media. In the video, the people can be seen rescuing the injured workers and taking them to the emergency ward of JNMCH Aligarh.

Following the incident, the District Magistrate and Senior Superintendent of Police reached the spot and took a meat factory official into police custody.

Haji Zaheer, the owner of Al Dua meat factory, has been taken into police custody.

However, efforts are being done by the experts to stop the Ammonia gas leakage. The matter is being investigated.

Talking to the reporters, Aligarh DM Inder Vikram Singh said the condition of the injured workers is stable and their treatments are underway. However, the orders have been issued to all the concerned departments, he said.

Industrial gas leakage has killed workers across the country. Two days ago, more than two dozen workers were unconscious after Ammonia leakage at a prawn processing unit in Odisha.

In 2020, several people died from a gas leak at a chemical plant in Visakhapatnam.

While India suffered the world’s worst industrial disaster in 1984 when methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide factory owned by American Union Carbide Corporation in Bhopal. It is estimated the incident killed more than 15,000 people.
