The Supreme Court acquitted all three convicts in the 2012 Chhawla gangrape case on Monday. The three men were awarded the death penalty by the Delhi Court in 2014 for kidnapping, raping, and murdering a 19-year-old Uttarakhand girl in the Chhawla area of Delhi.

The three men, identified as Ravi Kumar, Rahul and Vinod, challenged the Delhi High Court order after they were given the death penalty in August 2014. While confirming the punishment, the court said they were predators moving on the streets and looking for prey.

The victim’s mutilated body was found in a field with multiple injuries in Haryana’s Rewari area.

2012 Chhawla Gangrape Case

Anamika, originally from Uttarakhand’s Pauri, used to live in Qutub Vihar in Delhi’s Chhawla area. On February 14, 2012, the victim was returning home late at night from work when the three men kidnapped her and took her in a red Indica car. According to the reports, the men first raped her, tortured her, and also thrashed her with car tools.

When the police recovered Anamika’s body, they saw cigarette and hot iron scars on her body. The police said the men also threw acid at her face and into her eyes after gangraping her. On the basis of the eyewitnesses, police caught Rahul, a few days later while he was roaming in the same red Indica car. He confessed his crime during interrogation and also gave information about Ravi and Vinod.

The three were given a death sentence by the first trial court in 2014 because it was considered to be one of the rarest of rare cases. Later, the Delhi High Court upheld this judgement as well.

A bench headed by Chief Justice U U Lalit in the Supreme Court on Monday acquitted the three convicts, Ravi Kumar, Rahul, and Vinod, while delivering the verdict in this case.
