A day after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath promised to create anti-Romeo squads in Bengal, Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has hit back at the BJP leader with a befitting reply on social media.

In a tweet, Moitra said the state loves its Romeos. She wrote, latest from Ajay Bisht aka YogiCM: Anti-Romeo squads in Bengal if BJP is voted in. Gudduji- Unlike your ilk, we Bengalis are lovers at heart! We like our music, our poetry, our mishti & yes, our Romeos too!

On Thursday, CM Adityanath while speaking at a BJP rally at Krishnarampur in Hooghly district, said that his party will create Uttar Pradesh-like-anti-Romeo squads to safeguard the interests of sisters and daughters in Bengal and put all TMC Romeos behind bars.

The Anti-Romeo squads came into effect in Uttar Pradesh after Adityanath assumed power as chief minister in 2017. The idea of such squads was coined by the BJP leader to ensure the safety of women.

During his campaign, the chief minister has also promised to make education and transport free for girls. Taking a dig at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he had said that Trinamool Congress came to power in the state about 10 years ago with a promise to serve maa-maati-manush (mother, motherland, and people) but failed to fulfill its promise.

He went on to attack Banerjee with questions like, why is Bengal not a safe place for women? This soil had produced so many social reformers. What happened to the youth of the state who have become frustrated? he asked.

Meanwhile, ahead of voting for the fourth phase of the West Bengal elections on 10 April, the two star campaigners from the saffron party,  Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President JP Nadda have been campaigning for their party in Bengal. They have participated in roadshows in Jagatdal, Madhyamgram, Rajarghat, Gopalpur, Chakdaha, and Bardhaman on Friday.

On its third day in office, the new BJP government in Uttar Pradesh, headed by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, began implementing one of its key promises by setting up “Anti-Romeo Squads” to check eve-teasing, stalking and harassment of women in various parts of the state.

The police has formed Anti-Romeo Squads in 12 districts including Lucknow, Kanpur, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Banda, Sitapur, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Bijnor, Shamli, Bulandshahr and Ghaziabad.

Police personnel visibly marked their presence in major public places including those in the vicinity of girls’ colleges, coaching centres and shopping malls.

On the first day, the police chose to counsel suspect youths. According to official sources, police teams will continue strict vigilance to prevent any harassment of the women. The process of forming such squads is in progress throughout the state.

DGP Javed Ahmed said: “The idea is to reclaim public spaces and make them safe for women.” This new squad is more an organised action plan to curb the menace of eve-teasing and harassment of women, he said.

The new government’s move is being viewed as a unique experiment and the media is covering it extensively.
