Noted historian and Padma Vibhushan awardee Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare passed away on November 15. He was 99 and breathed his last at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital of Pune. As per reports, his last rites were performed at Vaikunth crematorium at 10:30 am.

He had been put on a ventilator after being admitted a few days ago due to age-related ailments. According to The Hindu, Purandare was diagnosed with pneumonia a week ago.

The deceased historian was then admitted to Pune’s Hospital. On 14 November, his health deteriorated after which he had been in an extremely critical condition, the doctor claimed. He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Babasaheb Purandare. Taking it to Twitter, he tweeted that he is beyond words. The demise of Shivshahir Babasaheb Purandare leaves a major void in the world of history and culture. It is thanks to him that the coming generations will get further connected to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His other works will also be remembered.

All about Babasaheb Purandare

Born as Moreshwar Balwant, Babasaheb was passionate about Chhatrapati Shivaji and dedicated his life to researching the Maratha ruler. He wrote several books on him and also helmed a popular play on Chhatrapati’s life, Jaanta Raja.

His commendable work served him with several prestigious accolades including Maharashtra state’s highest civilian honour the Maharashtra Bhushan in 2015 and India’s second-highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan in 2019.

Babasaheb delivered 12,000 lectures on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the last 8 decades. His notable works are Lal Mahal, Rajgad, Raja Shivchhatrapati, Jaanta Raja, Agra, Shelarkhind, Savitri, Mujaryache Mankari, Panhalgad, Pratapgad, Fulwanti, and others.

In other news, on Sunday, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) blamed Delhi’s government for the air pollution emergency that has arisen in the Capital. Adesh Kumar Gupta, the president of BJP’s Delhi unit slammed Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for the air pollution crisis in Delhi.
