In another medical negligence incident in Madhya Pradesh, a six-month-old baby boy died in his mother’s arms due to the lack of an ambulance at a government hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Datia district.

The incident took place in Indergarh government hospital on Thursday.

Reports state Renu Jatav, a resident of Baderi village, was rushed to the Indergarh government hospital at 11 am on Thursday after her child’s condition deteriorated who is suffering from acute pneumonic symptoms. The doctors referred the child to the Datia district hospital after initial treatment.

The helpless woman called 108 for an ambulance but it didn’t reach there for more than three hours. Due to the lack of an ambulance, the baby died in her lap in the hospital.

The woman also said that two ambulances, funded out of the MLA Local Area Development Fund, were parked at the community health center but were reportedly not in service due to insufficient fuel.

Renu accused the Indergarh hospital management and doctors of their negligence which led to her baby’s death. She said that the hospital management said that they would not send that ambulance till they get approval from the senior officials. Also, the doctors on duty stated that the ambulance would go on individual expenses.

She said she even visited the nearest police station after her baby died to file a complaint against the hospital management but the police drove her away.

Taking cognizance of the matter, a team of the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM), the district’s Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO), a police officer, and a tehsildar were sent to the health center to investigate.

Explaining the reason for delaying in the arrival of the 108 ambulance, the district’s Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) RB Kurele said there is a protocol to first dial 108 for an ambulance on priority, but there are other ambulances that are operated by the Patient Welfare Committee on a no profit, no loss basis. In case of an emergency, these ambulances must provide services free of cost.

Kurele said the investigation is underway and strict action would be taken against the hospital authorities after recording the statement of the woman.
