PV Sindhu lost to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi in Badminton Asia Championship’s semi-finals. The Indian Olympic medalist had to be satisfied with the bronze medal. The 26 yearn old started the match on a strong footing but the momentum shift made her lose that match with 21-13, 19-21, 16-21 to world’s No. 2 Yamaguchi.

However, the eventful match between PV Sindhu and Yamaguchi was not as smooth as expected. Current best Indian badminton player had to face a wrong verdict by chair umpire that affected the result of the match. The penalty controversy started after Sindhu won the first game by 21-13 and was also leading the second game with 14-1.

But things turned unlikely when PV Sindhu was handed a point penalty for taking too long to serve between points, however, the seat umpire failed to notice that it was Yamaguchi who was not ready. But this led to an argument between the chair umpire and Sindhu.

The two-time Olympic medallist was even seen arguing with the referee that she had to wait to serve as her opponent was not ready. Sadly, her explanations were not entertained and Yamaguchi was given one point. Soon after than Sindhu also lost her momentum and lost in the semi-finals of Badminton Asia Championship.

PV Sindhu didn’t hold back and after the match she called umpire’s decision as ‘unfair’. She said, “The umpire told me that you’re taking too much time but the opponent wasn’t ready at that point.” The 26 years old believes that the unfair decision was one of the reasons behind her loss.

Sindhu said, “I mean this because at that moment it was 14-11 and could have reached to 15-11. But instead, it became 14-12 and later she took continuous points. And I think it was very unfair. Maybe I could have won the match and played the finals.”
