Did the cricket schedule force Ben Stokes to leave ODI format at the age of 31? https://apnlive.com/sports-news/ben-stokes-retirement-cricket-schedule/ Tue, 19 Jul 2022 13:09:28 +0000 https://apnlive.com/?p=351944 England's Test captain Ben Stokes has announced his retirement from ODI format at the age of 31.

The post Did the cricket schedule force Ben Stokes to leave ODI format at the age of 31? appeared first on APN News.

]]>

England’s Test captain Ben Stokes dropped a big bombshell on Monday when he announced said that he would be retiring from the 50-overs format. Stokes is playing his last ODI match today against South Africa in Durham.

While announcing his retirement from One Day Internationals, Ben Stokes said that playing all the three formats of the game seems unsustainable for him right now and precisely that’s why he decided to call time on his ODI career.

But this was one of those rare times when a 31 years old International cricketer took retirement from ODIs and hence the debate over cricket schedules has also begun on internet. For many the new of Stokes’ retirement came as a disappointment as it is a reflection of cricketing schedule at this moment.

It seems nothing less than a madness for players, especially for the ones who play all the three formats, the fatigue, the chase, the pressure to perform well after living in bio bubble and handling continuous criticism was already something that the world wasn’t interested in understanding but now the cricket schedule is something that the ICC should focus on.

The ICC can’t just keep putting on ICC events and then individual boards can’t just keep filling the gaps with bilateral series and their own leagues. With so much of non-stop play the cricketers will be forced to say I’m done. The case of Ben Stokes is evident enough of this fact.

It also seems like ODIs is something that everyone is tired off. As most of the players like Test cricket as it gives them a chance to challenged their skill at every innings. Moreover, 20-20 being the shortest format is an easy access, hence the 50 overs cricket is getting left out. In addition to that several countries have also pulled out of bilateral series in white-ball cricket, which has coasted them in World Cup qualification.

Indian bowling attack has ripped the England team by dismissing three batsmen at duck. England’s former skipper Joe Root, current Test captain Ben Stokes and opener Jason Roy got dismissed at Zero, lucky for them, none of them sustained golden ducks.

Indian blowers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami not only troubled English batters but have already sent five batsmen back to their pavilion. After Joe Root, Ben Stokes and Jason Roy, Man-in-form Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingston were also dismissed later.

Currently, England captain Joss Butler and Moeen Ali are on the crease somehow managing the ruthless Indian bowling attack. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah’s brilliant bowling spell has restricted England score board to 30 runs in 10 overs.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma won the toss against Joss Butler and chose to bowl first. The Oval pitch of England is also responding well to the Indian bowling attack. After losing the T20 series England was looking for a chance to redeem themselves but the current scenario seems like their worst nightmare.

Wicket Keeper Rishabh Pant should also be applauded for his brilliant work behind the stumps. Although throughout the India tour of England, Pant was being hailed for his reflexes but today’s match is a clear proof of his capabilities.

All the wickets bagged today by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami were catch-out by Rishabh Pant. While Bumrah took Jason Roy, Johnny Bairstow, Joe Root and Liam Livingston’s wicket, on the other hand, Shami took, Ben Stokes’s wicket and has also restricted the England batters and is not giving much runs.

Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli is not playing the first One Day Internationals, as he had sustained groin injury during the last T20 match. Currently, he’s under observation and Shreyas Iyer will come to bat at no. 3.

India Playing XI: Rohit Sharma(Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (Wicket-Keeper), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Yuzvendra Chahal and Prasidh Krishna.

England Playing XI: Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(Wicket-keeper/Captain), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Craig Overton, David Willey, Brydon Carse and Reece Topley.

What a thrilling first day match it has been for India. As expected, the England bowling attack was attacking and ruthless, but it’s the vice-captain of India, Rishabh Pant who turned the table.

After winning the toss, England elected to bowl first and England captain Ben Stokes used the right bowling combinations to get early wickets. Seemed like England’s plan literally came to life when former Indian captain Virat Kohli was dismissed at 11 runs.

But that’s Rishabh Pant decided to play the game his way. Those who follow Rishabh Pant, must be knowing that he’s credited as the most entertaining player in the world. Reason being where most of the experienced players like to take their inning slow in Test cricket, Rishabh Pant does the same what he would do in the shorted format.

And today as well the cricketer was in the attacking mode when he single handedly tested the patience of England bowlers. Joining him came Ravindra Jadeja whop was given preference over the best spinner in the world, Ravichandran Ashwin. And the all-rounder did not disappoint his coach, Rahul Dravid.

Both Jadeja and Pant made brilliant partnership and gave India the much-needed stability in the decider game. Vice-captain Rishabh Pant got out at 146 off 111 balls, falling short of four runs to register another record. On the other hand, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja ended the third session of the first day at 88 not-out.

India will begin the second day Test on 338 for 7 wickets, with Jadeja and Mohammed Shami on crease. Both the cricketers can bring serious damage to England incase they don’t get early wickets in the first session of the second day.

The IND vs ENG second day test will begin today at 3 pm from Birmingham’s Edgbaston. Audience can watch the match at Sony Sports network and the digital broadcast will be available on Sony Liv app.

England successfully chased down the 299-run target set by New Zealand on the 5th day of the second Test at Trent Bridge Nottingham.

With this win, England have gained a 2-0 lead in the three match Test series against the World Test Championship winner New Zealand, thanks to Johnny Bairstow’s thrilling 136 off 92 and similarly belligerent 75* from England’s new skipper Ben Stokes.

As soon as Jonny Bairstow demolished New Zealand bowling in tough chase of 299 runs, Tweeple have started praising the team and the contribution Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes in this historic win against New Zealand.

The performance drew great appreciation from the cricket fraternity on Twtitter.

England’s new skipper Ben Stokes had won the toss and chosen to bowl first. In response, New Zealand put a mammoth total of 553 runs on the board with help of Daryl Mitchell 190 and Tom Blundell’s 106 in Nottingham.

In reply, England were very good in their first outing as Joe Root continued his golden run with the bat, scoring 176 while Ollie Pope hit his first Test century at the new no.3 spot. England reached on 539 with small cameos of skipper Ben Stokes and Ben Foakes.

For New Zealand, Trent Boult registered another five wicket haul while James Anderson had completed his 650 wickets in Tests.

New Zealand did well in the second innings of the match and managed to make 286 runs in their second innings after fifties from Will Young (56), Devon Conway (52) and Daryl Mitchell (62*). Adding 14 leads from the first innings, New Zealand has given the target of 298 runs.

When England came out to chase the tough target, the team were at 93/4 and expecting a defeat but then Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes came together.

Bairstow slammed 7 sixes and 14 fours in his 136-run knock while Stokes played a captain’s knock, hitting 75* as England achieved the target with 5 wickets to spare.

Given England’s modest approach in Test cricket off late, not many would have expected them to go for the win, as they already had a 1-0 lead in the series. But this is a new England Test team, led by Ben Stokes and managed by head coach Brendon McCullum.

Ben Stokes has commenced the new ear of England cricket by taking over the Test captaincy after Joe Root’s resignation. However, it won’t be easy for Ben to lead the England team. Firstly, because Joe Root has left an impeccable body of work and records as he was the most successful Test captain of England, with a record of most wins.

Secondly, because the initiator of cricket sport recently has failed to live up to the mark and has failed miserably. Hence, good and bad both records are after Ben Stokes. However, the new skipper is in a much more relaxed space of mind and doesn’t seem to be bothered by either.
