Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s controversial remark about Mumbai owing its financial capital status due to the hard work of Gujaratis and Rajasthanis on Saturday triggered a political storm across the country.

Congress has hit out at Governor calling his remarks a hoshiyari while the Shiv Sena chief accused of him dividing Hindus.

After backlash from the opposition, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde distanced himself from the Governor’s comment and said that these were the Governor’s personal comments and he did not support them.

Taking to Twitter, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh tweeted that his name is Bhagat Singh Koshyari but as a governor, there is not a bit of hoshiyari (smartness) in what he says and does. He is sitting on the chair only because he faithfully obeys the command of we two, he said in his tweet.

Hitting out at the Governor, Thackeray demanded an apology from Koshiyari and said the remark is an insult to Marathi Manoos (Marathi speaking sons of the soil) and Marathi pride. The government should decide whether to send him back home or to prison, former Maharashtra CM said.

The Governor is the messenger of the President, he takes the words of the President throughout the country. But if he does the same mistakes then who will take action against him?, Thackeray asked in a press a conference at his residence Matoshree.

The Governor has insulted the Marathis and their pride, Thackeray further said.

The controversy stirred after Bhagat Singh Koshyari had said that Mumbai wouldn’t have been the financial capital if not for Gujaratis and Rajasthanis. He was speaking at an event in Mumbai.

If Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially Mumbai and Thane, no money would be left here. Mumbai would not be able to remain the financial capital of the country, the Governor said in his speech.
