Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat along with his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other Indian Army personnel died in the helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu on December 8. CDS General Bipin Rawat was on board an Indian Air Force (IAF) helicopter when it crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor. CDS General Rawat along with his wife Madhulika Rawat was taken to the hospital after the crash, but he succumbed to the injuries, while his wife also died in the hospital.

CDS General Bipin Rawat belonged to a family of military officers and was one of the most celebrated soldiers of his time. On January 1, 2020, General Rawat become the country’s first-ever Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), making him India’s foremost military officer.

Who was Lachu Singh Rawat alias Laxman Singh Rawat?

Born in Uttrakhand’s Pauri Garhwal district, General Bipin Rawat’s father name was Lachu Singh Rawat alias Laxman Singh Rawat, who also served the Indian Army and retired as Lieutenant General from the army. General Lakshman Singh Rawat (retd.) had served as the Deputy Chief of Army Staff and in 1988 he hung his boots from the post. Apart from his father Lachu Singh Rawat, his mother was the daughter of an ex-MLA Kishan Singh Parmar from Uttarkashi.

Second and third-generation army officers are common in the military, but perhaps General Bipin Rawat was the first to become the fourth generation of his family to serve the military. The son of the former deputy chief led the army of 1.3 million soldiers.

Since his younger days, General Bipin Rawat was known for two things the most, the ability to come up with new ideas and not being shy to express them. As Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Rawat ranked above the other four-star military officers heading the Air Force, Navy, and Army. General Rawat headed the Department of Military Affairs in the Defence Ministry.
