Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait said on Thursday that on call of Samyukta Kisan Morcha he participated in the farmer labourer Mahapanchayat organized at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi. He said today the farmers of the country are suffering the consequences of the government’s wrong policy and its dictatorship.

Hundreds of farmers from Punjab on Thursday gathered at Delhi’s Ramlila maidan to attend Kisan Mahapanchayat. The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of 37 farm unions, which gave the call for the mahapanchayat on February 22 at a meeting in Chandigarh, got a no-objection certificate for the gathering from the Delhi Police and Municipal Corporation on March 11.

The Delhi police gave its approval to farmers to hold the mahapanchayat at the condition of gathering not exceeding to 5000, no tractor trolleys, no march at the Ramlila Maidan. The Delhi Police also said they had asked SKM to restrict the number of participants to 5000 but more than 30,000 farmers from Punjab are expected to reach the national capital.

The police also issued a traffic advisory for the everyday commuters to avoid roads leading to central Delhi. The Mahapanchayat was held at a time when other farmer unions under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and SKM (Non-political) have been holding sit-ins at Shambhu and Khannauri border for the last 1 month after the Delhi Chalo march was stopped by the security forces.

Farmers have been demanding legislation ensuring the legal status for MSP for their crops. They are also demanding implementation of Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations for MSP, pensions for farmers and agricultural workers and waiver of farm debts.

According to the Samyukta Kisan Morcha farmers would adopt a Sankalp Patra or letter of resolution at the Mahapanchayat to intensify the fight against the pro-corporate, communal, dictatorial policies of the Modi government, to fight to save farming, food security, livelihood and the people from corporate loot.

During a press conference on Monday in Bengaluru, a chaotic scene arose when a group of people approached Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait and threw black ink on his face. Soon after the incident came in limelight, the news agency ANI shared the visual of the incident on its official Twitter handle.

In the thirty seconds video, it can be seen that the BKU’s leader’s face is all covered with black ink and a ruckus erupted, where farm leaders and other people fight with each other, throwing chairs and shouting at the conference room.

Talking about the incident, BKU said slammed the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for not providing security at the event. He said there was no security arrangement and support given by the local police at the event. This has been done in collusion with the government, the BKU leader added.

Reports said that the press conference was held to clarify the sting operation, where a farmer from Karnataka was caught asking for money.

While criticizing the incident, the Kisan Ekta Morcha tweeted that these type of attacks are happening only to break the spirits of the farmers. Some people are not able to digest the victory of farmers in the Farmers Protest. The self-esteem of farmers is being hurt, against which we shall protest, the added.

A day before, the Tikait also addressed a huge Kisan Mazdoor panchayat at Muzaffarnagar’s village Kakda in Uttar Pradesh, where he indirectly warned the state government that the electricity supply will be snapped in urban areas if villages do not get regular power supply.
