In another cyber fraud incident, a 20-year-old man allegedly extorted Rs 90,000 from a woman on the pretext of reactivating her blocked Instagram account. The Delhi police have arrested the accused on Thursday.

On March 29, the woman complained that her account with more than 8 lakh followers has been blocked. Later in the day, she received a text from a scammer named Sam on WhatsApp saying that he will help her recover her blocked account.

The accused initially asked the woman to pay Rs 10,000 to get her account back and later demanded Rs 80,000 threatening her to delete the account if she failed to do that. The accused asked the woman to transfer the amount to different bank accounts.

During the investigation, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan traced the mobile number of the accused to Junaid Beg, a resident of Jamia Nagar. The police arrested him from Zakir Nagar near Batla House.

Beg, during interrogation, revealed that he used to target Instagram users with lakhs of followers and once he spotted any abusive content on their accounts, he used to report them to Instagram.

On the blocking of their accounts, Beg then reaches out to the account holders and demand money from them to recover their social media account.

Earlier this month, a Delhi-based woman was robbed of more than Rs 8.6 lakh when she tried to apply for a job through Instagram. She was duped by lakhs when she clicked on a job advertisement on Instagram.

The scammer asked the victim to first deposit Rs 750 as a registration fee. After this, he got the woman to transfer more than Rs 8.6 lakh to his account as a gate pass fee, insurance, and security money. The scammer continued to ask for more money when the woman found something suspicious and filed a complaint.
