Major portions of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, US collapsed on early Tuesday morning after it was hit by a large container ship. The incident occurred at nearly 1.30 am (US local time). The Baltimore City Fire department said the collapse is a mass casualty incident.

According to reports many vehicles fell into the river below. The rescuers were searching for at least 7 people in the water. Some reports said upto 20 construction workers were there on the Baltimore Bridge at the time of the incident. A video of the incident which was widely shared on social media showed the moment the 3 km long bridge collapsed.

It seems the vessel had hit one of the supports of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing the roadway to break apart in many places and plunge into the water. The ship caught fire and appeared to sink. Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, the registered owner of the ship, and the manager, Synergy Marine Group, said it is a Singapore flagged ship Dali which collided with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland.

He said the exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined; the Dali has now mobilized its qualified individual Incident response service. It added that all crew members, including the 2 pilots who were aboard, have been accounted for and there are no reports of injuries.

The local traffic police said all lanes on both directions of the bridge have been closed and the traffic is being de-toured. Maryland Governor Wes Moore also declared a state of emergency after the collapse of the bridge. The bridge was opened in 1977, spans the Patapsco River, a vital artery that along with the Port of Baltimore is a hub for shipping on the East Coast. It is named after the writer of the Star Spangled Banner.

More than 60 people were injured and a nine-year-old girl was killed after a footbridge collapsed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur during Baisakhi celebrations on Friday.

The incident occured at Benisangam in Bail village in the Chenani Block when people in large numbers were on the bridge.

Reports said over 60 people were injured and 25 were rushed to the district hospital out of which 5 injured people are in critical condition. The video of the incident is doing rounds on the internet wherein the bridge could be seen overcrowded and the evacuation process was underway. Locals jumped to help the injured and brought them out. Police and health officials rushed to the spot later and started evacuating the people trapped in the ruckus.

Reports said the rescue operation was completed in an hour.

A probe has been ordered into the incident which is led by the Deputy Commissioner of Udhampur. Officials said overcrowding was the cause of the bridge collapse as a large number of people gathered at the Bani Sangam temple to celebrate Baisakhi.

Reports further said devotees going to the temple were passing through or were standing on the bridge over a water stream on Friday during Baisakhi mela. Eyewitnesses said as many as 100 people were on the bridge when it collapsed in the river.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh informed he is in touch with the Deputy Commissioner after receiving the report of the incident and the local administration will provide all possible assistance.

A video from UP’s Muzaffarnagar has surfaced where the JCB bulldozer had arrived to carry out the demolition process of a hundred-year-old bridge which was built over a river. However, in the process of demolition, the portion of the bridge fell apart leading to a domino effect that led to the whole bridge collapsing into the river.

In the video, the JCB bulldozer machine can be seen proceeding with the demolition of the bridge by hammering down one part of the bridge. However, after the first part of the bridge collapsed, it transpired into a domino effect which led to other parts of the bridge collapsing as well. When the whole bridge collapsed, it took with it the JCB bulldozer.

A man can also be seen making it out alive out of the collapsing bridge. As for the driver of the JCB bulldozer, it was according to reports that the driver was rescued subsequently after the chaos escalated.

The video of the collapsing bridge has been making rounds on the internet as many people took a facetious and hilarious spin on the whole incident as one user came forward and sarcastically wrote that these are the skilled workers of Uttar Pradesh whereas another user kept the sarcastic energy going and posted a picture of a man sitting on a branch and axing it, implying both the situations corresponds with each other.

A video of a similar nature had gone viral in August, where, due to heavy flooding in the area, a railway bridge collapsed and fell into the river. In the video, strong waves of the river can be seen taking away the collapsed bridge. However, it was reported that no deaths or injuries had resulted after the collapse. The incident occurred in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra region.
