In an eerie rerun of the gruesome Shraddha Walkar murder, a 30-year-old woman was reportedly murdered and chopped to pieces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district, police said on Sunday. The pieces of the victim’s body were dumped by the accused, who has been arrested, across various areas in the district.

The macabre killing has sparked outrage and protests in the area as locals demanded an “exemplary punishment” for the accused.

According to the police, the victim’s brother Tanveer Ahmad Khan had filed a missing report on March 7, wherein he said that his sister had left for computer coaching classes the previous day (March 7) but hasn’t returned home in Soibugh area of Budgam district in central Kashmir.

They said that after initial investigation, several suspects including the accused, Shabir Ahmad Wani, son of Abdul Aziz Wani of Mohanpora, Budgam—a carpenter by profession—was taken in custody and confessed to the crime after being interrogated.

Giving details about the grisly murder, a senior official said that the 45-year-old accused—a father of two—killed the woman, chopped her into pieces and buried them at different locations, including near a railway bridge at Budgam Railway Station.

He said Wani disclosed location of the victim’s body parts after further investigation and the same were then recovered by the police, adding that a murder case under relevant sections of the law has been registered against the accused and further investigation is underway.

Local reports quoting the victim’s claim that the accused—who also worked as a mason and visited their home often for installing tiles—had approached them with a marriage proposal with one of his relatives but was turned down by the slain woman as well as her family.

Instead, the woman was soon engaged to be married to another man which reportedly made Wani furious and led to the ghastly killing. However, the police have said that the motive of the murder is yet to be ascertained.

Outrage and protests

Meanwhile, the murder sparked protests in the central Kashmir district as protesters, including the victim’s family, hit the streets and demanded swift justice and death penalty for the accused.

Reports said that with hundreds, including a large number of women swarmed Wani’s home in Ompora area of Budgam, demanding capital punishment for the culprit. The furious mob were demanding that the man be handed over to them so he can be meted with the same fate as the victim.

They urged the local police and district administration to inflict exemplary punishment on the killer as it’s a “rarest of rare” cases.

The case bears an eerie resemblance to the infamous Shraddha Walkar murder case, where the victim’s body was cut into pieces and hidden inside a freezer.

The accused, 28-year-old Aaftab Amin Poonawala, allegedly sawed Shraddha Walkar’s body into 35 pieces and kept them in a 300-litre fridge for almost three weeks at his residence in south Delhi’s Mehrauli before dumping them across the city over several days. Poonawala is currently in jail facing trial.

Shraddha was allegedly strangled, chopped into 35 pieces, and disposed off at different locations of a forest area in south Delhi for several months by her live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala.
