The Delhi Police on Friday busted a racket that duped banks of over Rs 50 lakh by fraudulently using details of celebrities. The Shahdara police have arrested five people in this case.

Chhayya Sharma, Joint CP of the Eastern Range, said a gang of cheaters forged government IDs of 95 Bollywood actors and cricketers, such as MS Dhoni, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Sachin Tendulkar, Saif Ali Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Alia Bhatt, Shilpa Shetty, and other celebrities, to dupe banks over Rs 50 lakh.

According to the reports, the fraudsters used the GST numbers of eminent celebrities which are available online and procured their PAN Card details, and later got the credit cards issued in their names from Pune-based fintech startup One Card.

Rohit Meena, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Shahdara, informed that the investigation into this matter is underway.

The accused are identified as Puneet, Mohd Asif, Sunil Kumar, Pankaj Mishar and Vishwa Bhaskar Sharma. They purchased the products worth Rs 21.32 lakh from these cards which alerted the company. It immediately informed the police who later nabbed the five accused.

During the interrogation, the accused disclosed that they used to get GST details of these celebrities from Google. They were very well aware that the first two digits of GSTIN are state codes and the next 10 digits are PAN numbers.

Since the celebrities’ dates of birth are available on Google, they got the PAN cards remade fraudulently by putting their own pictures on them so that during video verification, their looks match with the photo available on their PAN/Aadhaar card. Similarly, they used to forge their Aadhaar cards.

As per the reports, the fraudsters were aware that these celebrities possibly have good CIBIL scores which would brighten their chances of getting credit cards.

The company said the accused mistakenly left the original PAN and Aadhaar number and date of birth intact and uploaded the forged PAN card/Aadhaar card on their app. Accordingly, their system fetched the bureau details based on the original PAN and suggested a credit limit.

The company said they got to know about this fraud when their system got an alert that multiple onboarding attempts were being made using a single device.
