Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu, who recently grabbed eyeballs over her opinions on the controversial hijab row, on Friday revealed that she has celiac disease.

The 22-year-old slammed trolls for targeting her over her weight gain on social media. Speaking to PTI, Sandhu revealed that she is going through celiac disease which is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein that is found in wheat, rye, and barley. She said that she is one of those individuals who was first bullied that she’s skinny and now people are bullying her for gaining weight.

Sandhu further said that she went to New York for the first time which is a whole other world altogether. She is someone who believes in body positivity and one of the Miss Universes for the very first time is going through that.

Harnaaz Sandhu was crowned Miss Universe 2021 and her win made her the third entrant from India to bag the title after 21 years. Ever since her return to India, she has been touring the country. Last week, Sandhu also met Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann at his official residence in Punjab.

What is Celiac disease?

Celiac is an autoimmune disorder in which a person’s immune system works against the body. This happens when the person consumed gluten which is found in wheat, rye, and barley. A person suffering from celiac can suffer both weight gain as well as weight loss. The disease also leads to malnourishment, loss of bone density, neurological diseases, fertility issues, and in worse cases even cancer.

Symptoms of celiac include irregular periods, constipation, acidity, infertility, muscular cramps, osteoporosis, anaemia, and joint pain.
