A 17-year-old footballer died in Chennai today allegedly due to medical negligence. The incident happened after she underwent surgery at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai for a ligament tear on her right leg.

According to the reports, Priya underwent arthroscopic surgery at the Periyar Government Peripheral Hospital on November 7 where she was transferred to Rajiv Gandhi Hospital. However, after her family shifted her to RGGGH then they got to know the surgery at the first hospital had gone wrong. So, the doctors at RGGGH said she had to undergo amputation.

On Monday, the doctors performed another surgery to remove tissue and since then she had been in an unconscious state. The family said Priya woke up and met her brother and mother in the ICU but died at 7:15 am due to multi-organ failure.

Family members and friends of the football player halted the van in front of the mortuary at Rajiv Gandhi Hospital and demanded the doctors’ arrest for allegedly performing a botched surgery.

Two doctors at a government hospital have been suspended and the police are investigating the case. Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramaniam assured that legal action would be taken against the doctors.

Minister Subramaniam said It’s an irreparable loss. The surgery was fine but the compression bandage was put so tight that it stopped blood circulation. We’ve also initiated a police investigation and suspended two doctors.

State’s BJP chief Annamalai also expressed condolences on her demise. He said he is shocked to know footballer Priya died during the wrong treatment. He said he expresses his condolences to the family.

Slamming the DMK-led government, the BJP chief said the government should provide a government job for the family member and grant a solatium of Rs 2 crore. He said every department is destroyed in this DMK regime in disappointing that the medical department has joined that list.

The ruling DMK government has also announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the family.
