The Karnataka government has announced a weekend curfew in eight districts bordering Kerala and Maharashtra to curb the spread of Covid-19 cases in the state. The curfew will be in effect from 9 pm on Fridays till 5 am on Mondays beginning from August 6 to 16.

The newly appointed Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai took the decision at a high-level meeting held to review the pandemic situation in the state. The eight districts neighbouring the states of Kerala and Maharashtra are Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bidar, Kalaburagi, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Mysuru, and Chamarajanagar. 

According to the new guidelines, except for the essential and emergency activities, the movement of individuals will be restricted between Friday 9 pm to Monday 5 am. However, the essential goods shops, street vendors, public distribution system, medical shops can operate between 5 am and 2 pm, the government order said.

Other facilities like restaurants and other eateries can accept the orders for takeaways and home delivery is available round the clock. Bars and pubs have not been permitted to open, only standalone liquor shops and outlets have been allowed to operate from 5 am till 2 pm.

The new guidelines have allowed all states and central government offices and their autonomous bodies, corporations dealing with Covid-19 to be fully functional during the weekend curfew.

The night curfew has also been extended in Bengaluru as the police have invoked Section 144(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure in the city till August 16 in order to contain the spread of Covid. In view of the curfew, Bengaluru Namma Metro has also revised its timings. The last train from terminal stations will leave at 8 pm instead of 9 pm from August 7 to 16 according to BMRCL.

Meanwhile, Karnataka has reported 24,439 active cases of Covid-19 till Friday. A total of 36,705 people have succumbed to the virus, according to the Union ministry of health and family welfare.
