Just when it seems the coronavirus is going away, the new Covid-19 variant or the cases of the existing variant start increasing in some parts of the world. China, where the first Covid-19 case was discovered, is once again experiencing a significant increase in coronavirus cases. In the midst of this, China has placed a curfew on 9 million people of Changchun, a northeastern industrial hub.

According to the guidelines, residents are not allowed to leave their houses for unspecified reasons and must undergo three rounds of mass screening. Furthermore, the city authorities have shut down all non-essential enterprises and suspended all public transportation. The fast-spreading Omicron strain has also led schools in Shanghai’s financial district to shut down.

The Chinese government has consistently stated that every community or city where one or more cases of the virus have been reported will be placed under lockdown. These measures have been specified under China’s zero-tolerance approach to the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement for lockdown came on a day when national authorities recorded over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases in multiple cities, the largest single-day increase in over two years. In the province of Jilin, which surrounds Changchun, 98 cases were discovered. Changchun, on the other hand, only reported two occurrences on Friday.

The Chinese government has already enforced a partial curfew in Jilin city, which shares the same name as the province it is located in. As a precaution, travel links to other cities have been stopped. Today, 93 cases were reported in the city of Jilin.

Since the initial outbreak of COVID-19 in China in early 2020, the number of new cases has risen to over 1,000. Of these, 703 were domestically transmitted asymptomatic infections while 397 were local symptomatic cases.
