The protest over the death of a Class 12 student escalated as the protestors stormed the school, set the school and police buses on fire, and vandalized the premises in an effort to get justice in Kallakurichi. Protesters were also seen indulging in stone pelting, in which over 20 police officials, including DIG M Pandian, got injured.

The video of the agitators pushing down the barricades to barge into the premises of the international school is doing rounds on the internet. Protesters turned the car upside down and damaged it with hammers. Several of them also gatecrashed the premises and reached the terrace, destroying the school name board and holding high banners demanding justice for the victim. Some of them vandalized the premises, took things like furniture and almirahs from the school, and set them ablaze on the road.

The police had to open fire in the air to control the situation, but due to the recalcitrant nature of the situation, the efforts of the police proved futile. The road-blockade protest turned violent as it led to traffic disruption on the Chennai-Salem highway.

The protest comes after the Class 12 student of a private residential school in Chinnasalem ended her life on July 13. The 17-year-old jumped off her room, which is on the third floor. According to the postmortem report, the girl had sustained injuries before her death. An investigation is underway.

Since then, her parents, relatives and people have been staging a non-stop protest seeking justice. The family has refused to accept the body of the girl after the post-mortem examination, alleging foul play in her death. The post-mortem report states that the victim appeared to have died of hemorrhage and shock due to multiple injuries, whereas, the parents of the victim blame the school authorities for her death.

The girl left a suicide note behind in which she blamed two teachers for torturing her and a couple of other students by forcing them to study all the time. SP Selvakumar stated that the suicide note says the girl was scolded by these teachers and the other teachers also knew about the incident. A case was registered under Section 174 (unnatural death) of the CrPC.
