Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Manohar Lal Khattar tendered his resignation as chief minister of Haryana on Tuesday, citing divisions within the state’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) coalition.

Manohar Lal Khattar and his cabinet has sent the Haryana governor his resignation letter, according to a spokesman for the Haryana government.

The JJP, led by deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala, and the BJP’s relationship worsened after they were unable to come to a consensus on seat sharing in the state for the Lok Sabha elections. In the 2019 elections, the BJP had taken all 10 of the state’s Lok Sabha seats.

However, according to BJP leader Kanwar Pal Gurjar, Khattar is anticipated to take the oath of office as the chief minister of Haryana again.

According to sources, the saffron party is expected to establish a new government with six independent legislators and one member from the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP).

The BJP has 41 MLAs, the Congress has 30, and the JJP has 10 in the 90-member Haryana assembly. There is one MLA from the Hindu National Lok Dal (HLP) and seven from the Independents. If a party or coalition holds 46 or more seats, they can establish the state’s government.

This development came with worsening ties between the BJP and the JJP as a result of disagreements about seat-sharing for the next Lok Sabha elections.

The sources stated that although the BJP wanted to contest all 10 Lok Sabha seats, they were not in favour of the JJP contesting two seats.

After the saffron party lost the 2019 Haryana assembly election and did not win a majority, the BJP and the JJP forged a post-election partnership. The state will have an assembly election later this year.

At Chautala’s Delhi farmhouse, the JJP met with its MLAs to talk about the state of politics in Haryana.
