The veteran Congress leader Kapil Sibal has joined the list of Congress leaders who have jumped the ship from Congress to another party in the past few months.

Congress’ fifth high-profile exit in last five months disappointed the party that desperately tries to put its house in order and take on the BJP.

Kapil Sibal

The lawyer-politician, who was also a part of the Congress G-23 rebel group, had been vocal and increasingly sharp in his criticism of the Gandhis’ leadership in recent months. He has resigned from the party on May 16 but stayed the news secret since the Congress’ Chintan Shivir a week ago, Sibal revealed today after filling his nomination for Rajya Sabha.

Sunil Jakhar

Former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee chief Sunli Jakhar, who was searching for his political options since the Congress had removed him from all party posts for 2 years, quit the party this month and joined the BJP last week in Delhi in the presence of BJP national president JP Nadda. He had been show-caused by the Congress leadership for his criticism of former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who had lost two of his seats in recently concluded Punjab assembly elections.

Hardik Patel

Gujarat Congress working president, Hardik Patel resigned from the party earlier this month ahead of the Assembly Elections in Gujarat. He had resigned Congress alleging that he has been sidelined within the party. In his resignation letter, he slammed Rahul Gandhi, saying top leaders were distracted by mobile phones when he met them. The Gujarat Congress leaders were interested more in making chicken sandwiches for leaders than in party’s issues.

However he has not joined any political party but there are speculations that following Jakhar he could also joined the BJP in coming days.

Ashwani Kumar

Former law minister Ashwani Kumar quit the Congress in February a month before the Assembly Elections in Punjab. In his resignation letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, he said the move is consistent with his dignity.

He has been one of the youngest Additional Solicitor General of India. He has also served as the Minister of Law and Justice from October 2012 to May 2013.
