The Congress on Thursday decided to change its digital communications head and social media leadership. In came actor-politician Ramya in place of Deepinder Hooda, who had supervised the IT wing for some five years, a period in which the party saw its worst ever Lok Sabha performance.

Ramya, the 34-year-old former Kannada filmstar, had joined the party in 2012 and served as an MP from Mandya constituency.

NDTV, which broke the story, said the decision has yet not been made public, but the appointment is said to have been was okayed by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.

The report said Rahul Gandhi felt there should have someone more aggressive to take over its digital brand. The Congress vice-president himself took to twitter in 2015 unlike Congress Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor, who has a strong following in social media. Tharoor has described Ramya as an “authentic liberal voice to the national conversation”

The Kannada star’s social media interventions are often bold, opinionated and aggressive against the ruling BJP.

She also has a sedition case against her for her reaction to former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who had said Pakistan is hell. Ramya had tweeted, “Pakistan is a good country, not hell. Parrikar’s comments (that going to Pakistan or hell is the same thing) are not true.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
