After a Lancet study declared Russia’s vaccine safe last week, China has unveiled its coronavirus vaccines at a Beijing trade fair. The vaccines, produced by Chinese companies Sinovac Biotech and Sinopharm, are undergoing trials, the phase 3 of which is expected to be completed by year-end. The Russian vaccine is also undergoing trials.

The Indian Express reported on Monday that the Russian authorities had submitted data on the vaccine’s safety and efficacy to authorities in India.

On Chinese vaccine frontrunners, an AFP report quoted a Sinovac representative saying the firm has already built a vaccine factory that can produce 300 million doses a year.  The Chinese potential vaccines are among the nearly 10 in development worldwide to enter phase 3 trials, usually the last step ahead of regulatory approval.

In May, Chinese President Xi Jinping had pledged to make any vaccine developed by China a global public good. China’s state newspaper Global Times reported last month that the price of the vaccines will not be high. Beijing has been under attack from all parts of the world for the virus. And as an attempt to overcome the negative image, the Chinese have been keen to be not seen as profiteers from the pandemic. US President Donald Trump has not pulled any punches in keeping up the attack on the Chinese.

The Global Times report said two doses of the vaccine should cost less than $150, quoting the Sinopharm chairman, who said he had already been injected with one of the vaccines. Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that a military vaccine is in the works which can combat mutations of the virus. Covid-19’s rapid spread has been caused by the virus’s ability to mutate into newer versions which renders medication useless.

On the other hand, Russia will make its coronavirus vaccine Sputnik-V available from this week. Sputnik-V is the first Covid-19 vaccine to be launched and was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 11.
