The Taliban chief Haibatullah Akhundzada on Saturday issued an order and said Afghan women should cover their faces in public places and should wear the burqa as it is traditional and respectful.

As per a decree issued by Akhundzada, women should don a chadori which is a head-to-toe burqa. Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice put up posters on cafes and shops. The poster shows an image of the face-covering burqa and the message on the poster read, ‘According to Sharia law, Muslim women must wear the hijab.’

At a press conference, Akhundzada said a woman’s father or closest male relative would be visited and eventually jailed or fired from government jobs if she did not cover her face outside the home.

The Afghanistan-occupied Taliban has earlier received a major backlash across the world for imposing restrictions on women and directing them to cover themselves in public places. In the 1990 regime, Taliban made it mandatory for women to wear a burqa and women in Kabul already cover their hair with headscarves.

Earlier, the Taliban regime in Afghanistan stopped issuing driving licences to women and other provinces of the country. After the Taliban occupied Afghanistan, several restrictions have been imposed on girls and women of the country.

On March 23, the Taliban regime closed schools for girls for secondary classes all over the country. After a month of the takeover, they had allowed some schools for girls up to class 6 to reopen. Commenting on the matter, the Taliban’s Ministry of Education had said the country is close to a solution for reopening the school for girls.

Later, the Taliban regime barred women from working in government offices, banks, media companies, and other workplaces. The authorities said the regime will fully implement sharia law and argued that women should not work with men.
