The data also revealed that a total of 1.6 lakh Covid-19 tests were conducted during the past 24 hours.

Scientists have attributed the recent uptick in Covid-19 cases to the Omicron variant XBB.1.16 of the coronavirus diseases which is being closely monitored by the World Health Organization

On March 22, the WHO had added the XBB.1.16 to its list of variants under monitoring. The global body has said that the XBB.1.16 variant has a similar to its predecessor XBB.1.5, but contains additional changes in the spike protein, adding that lab studies have revealed that XBB.1.16 show signs of increased infectivity as well as potentially increased pathogenicity.

The number of active Covid infections in India has mounted to 23,091 as the country clocked 4,435 fresh cases of the deadly virus during the past 24 hours, Union Ministry’s data revealed on Wednesday.

As per the data updated at 8 am on the health ministry’s website, 4,435 new Covid-19 cases were registered in the past 24 hours in the biggest single-day jump since September 25 last year, when a total of 4,777 were logged.

According to the Union health ministry’s data, with the new cases included, the total number of cases in India since the pandemic began has surged to 4.47 crore (4,47,33,719) while the death toll has mounted to 5,30,916 with 15 new fatalities.

The data from the health ministry also states that 220.66 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Meanwhile, the surge in deaths due to the H3N2 variant of the seasonal influenza virus is triggering an outbreak scare in the country.

According to official data, India has recorded at least three deaths associated with H3N2 this season.

Fearing the outbreak of another Covid-19 like pandemic, health officials have urged people to wear masks, practice hand hygiene and get a flu shot if they haven’t already. H3N2, is a subtype of the influenza A strain, responsible for one of the three respiratory pandemics in the past century.

The flu variant’s symptoms tend to be the same as other forms of influenza, including fever or feeling feverish, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults), among others.

The cases of coronavirus, in India, may see a steep increase in January but are not likely to result in serious symptoms or death.

It is concerning that China reversed its position on travel restrictions at a time when it was dealing with a sharp increase in infections since it could increase the number of cases in India.

The sources claimed that during the previous increases, a fresh wave of Covid-19 affected people in East Asia 30–35 days before it reached India. According to the sources, Covid-19 cases peaked in China around 10 days ago, and there is currently an increasing trend in the US and several of the pacific island countries.

Due to two factors, China has been severely affected by the current wave. First, their population has little exposure to infectious diseases that arise naturally. Second, they have low immunisation rates, which may indicate that the vaccines are ineffective. Natural infection rates are very high in India, where the majority of people have received all available vaccinations.

A number of renowned medical professionals have also cautioned against panic and worry over a potential increase in Covid-19 instances in the nation, stating that even if it did occur, a spike in cases was unlikely to lead to an increase in hospital admissions or fatalities.

A major increase in border crossings is feared to occur as a result of Chinese officials eliminating travel restrictions. Despite the fact that India still doesn’t have a regular flight schedule with China, there are flights from Hong Kong.

Non-tourist travel is now permitted between Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland. Therefore, individuals from the Chinese mainland who may be carriers of the new strain can travel to India via Hong Kong.

A total ban on flights between Hong Kong and India was improbable and that the emphasis was more on strengthening screening procedures. India may make uploading an RT-PCR negative report a requirement for travellers from high-risk countries.

The mask requirement, according to health ministry officials, is also not likely to be reinstated. An official stated that administration was not going to levy any fines or require masks.
