Amid the rise in Covid BF.7 scare in China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday reviewed the Covid-19 situation in India at a high-level meeting.

The meeting was conducted after the country reported four cases of Omicron sub-variant BF.7, three in Gujarat and one in Odisha.

Speaking at the meeting, PM Modi directed ramping up random testing and genomic sequencing efforts. He also ensured that the entire Covid infrastructure at all levels is maintained in terms of human resources and equipment.

He further urged people to follow Covid appropriate behaviour while stepping out, especially during the festive season, including wearing masks in crowded places. PM Modi also requested precautionary doses for vulnerable and elderly groups.

Earlier, Union Health Ministry sent an official letter to the states and union territories and asked them to ramp up testing and send all Covid positive cases for genome sequencing so that the variant of the virus could be detected.

Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya held a meeting with senior officials and experts to review the Covid situation in the country and asked all officials to remain alert.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka government made masks mandatory at indoor and outdoor places. The state health minister K Sudhakar informed that an advisory will be issued soon to make masks mandatory at indoor, closed, and air-conditioned places and the Union government guidelines will be followed for screening international passengers at airports and random testing.

On other hand, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal addressed the media after conducting an emergency meeting with officials to review the Covid situation in the capital. Kejriwal said no cases of the BF.7 variant have been detected in Delhi, however, the health department is preparing 36,000 beds and currently, 800 beds are available.

He further said there is nothing to worry about as the officials are carrying out genome sequencing.

Another Delhi Capitals player has been tested Covid after a Rapid Antigen Test conducted on Wednesday afternoon, the sixth such case in the camp.

The BCCI will have another round of testing before today’s match. The organizers are keeping the option of rescheduling the match open for now, a report said.

Today’s match will be played with those players whose test reports return negative. The rest of the team and support staff will be tested later.

The development comes just hours ahead of the team’s IPL 2022 match against Punjab Kings.

The match, which was initially supposed to take place in Pune, was shifted to the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai to ensure there is no further spread as five members of the Delhi Capitals camp, including all-rounder Mitchell Marsh had tested positive.

The BCCI had announced on Tuesday through a press release that it was changing the venue of the match to avoid any further incidents due to any undetected case during a long-distance bus journey in a closed environment.

The Covid positive cases in Delhi Capitals include Patrick Farhat – Physiotherapist (tested positive on April 15th), Chetan Kumar – Sports Massage Therapist (tested positive on April 16th), Mitchell Marsh – Player (tested positive on April 18th), Dr Abhijit Salvi – Team doctor (tested positive on April 18th) and Akash Mane – Social Media Content team member (tested positive on April 18th).
