A 52-year-old man died in police custody after allegedly being thrashed by the cops inside a police station in Kochi, reports said on Monday. A police officer has been suspended in connection with the incident.

As per reports quoting eyewitness, the deceased, identified as Manoharan—a resident of Irupanam in Kochi— was thrashed by the policemen after he was taken into police custody for failing to stop his vehicle for inspection during a regular check on Saturday night. They claimed that Manoharan, despite being sober, was accused of drunk driving and taken to the police station and slapped by the police as soon as he removed his helmet. The cops also purportedly assaulted him inside the premises.

However, the police have refuted the allegations and claimed that Manoharan collapsed inside the Hill Palace Police Station after he was taken into custody for failing to stop his vehicle during a regular inspection on Saturday night.

They said that Manoharan collapsed in the police station and was taken to the Tripunithura Taluk Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Kochi where he passed away.

Refuting accusations of assault, the police said they have security camera footage as proof that the deceased was not thrashed by the policemen inside the police station premises.

The police have also cited the post-mortem report which states that Manoharan died of a cardiac arrest and also suffered from heart-related issues.

Meanwhile, the state human rights commission has also registered a case and directed the Kochi city police commissioner to conduct an investigation and submit a report in the incident.

Following the death, the family of the deceased and the Opposition parties protested outside the station.

A senior police official said that an officer of Sub-Inspector rank has been suspended and further investigation of the case is underway.

Hundreds of villagers attacked a police station in Bihar’s Katihar district, hours after a man died allegedly in custody. Seven policemen, including two station house officers (SHOs), suffered serious injuries in a mob attack.

The deceased, identified as Pramod Kumar Singh, was arrested on Friday for carrying liquor bottles in the dry state of Bihar. Villagers went on a rampage in Pranpur Police Station after a 40-year-old was found dead in the lockup. People started damaging the station and vehicles parked on the police station premises.

Acting Superintendent of Police (SP) Daya Shankar said all the injured are admitted to the hospital in Katihar and they are in stable condition. The two injured SHOs have been identified as Manitosh Kumar of Pranpur Police Station and Shailesh Kumar of Dandkohra Police Station, a senior officer said.

He said that the situation is entirely under control and that our teams are camping in the area. According to the reports, villagers entered the premises with sticks and rods and attacked the cops after hearing about Pramod’s death.

Shankar said the situation could only be brought under control after additional security personnel was called in from the nearest police stations. He alleged that the body of the man arrested was found as the police officers were preparing documents to produce Pramod before a court.

Police have sent Pramod’s body for a post-mortem examination. The police have also registered a case against those who attacked the policemen.

Earlier in April 2016, the Bihar government banned the manufacture, trade, storage, transportation, sale and consumption of liquor in the state. The law was made under the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act 2016 and those who are found violating will be held under a punishable offense.

A 22-year-old Muslim youth called for questioning at the police station died on Wednesday in the lock-up in Uttar Pradesh’s Kasganj district. The police said that Altaaf, an accused of running away with a woman from his village of Ahirauli in Kasganj, found him in an unconscious state inside the police station washroom.

The Kasganj Police statement has, however, been slammed on social media, with many, including actor Sushant Singh, raising questions about the police version.

Hitting out at Yogi Adityanath, the Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav branded the incident as another misdeed of UP’s thoko police. Condemning the incident, the SP took to Twitter and wrote under the patronage of the UP chief minister, criminals and police are committing an encounter of law and order in Uttar Pradesh. The guilty policemen should face a murder case and must be punished, the SP wrote on its official Twitter handle in Hindi.

Altaaf died by hanging himself in the washroom tap of the police station, the police said. When the police took him to a community health centre at Ashok Nagar in Kasganj, he died after 5 minutes of his treatment, the police said.

In a video widely shared on Twitter, Altaaf’s father said his son was murdered in custody while cops claimed that he hanged himself in a police station washroom with the drawstring of his jacket hood. It is not suicide, it is a police killing and they killed his son, Miya said.

Earlier, a sanitation worker, who was accused of stealing Rs 25 lakh from Jagdishpura police station in Agra, died in police custody after his health deteriorated during interrogation.

Altaaf’s father Chahat Miya claimed that he handed over his son to the police at 8 pm on Monday. His father was also in favour of fair investigation but on Tuesday when he went to see his child, the police didn’t allow him to meet Altaaf and also does misbehave with Altaaf’s father. Later in the evening, he died in police custody. We want justice now, his father said.

The death of Father Stan Swamy will continue to cast a cloud on India’s human rights record, said UN human rights expert Mary Lawlor. Arrested under the UAPA and in connection with the Elgar Parishad-Bhima Koregaon case in October 2020, Father Swamy, 84, died in a Mumbai hospital on July while his advocate was arguing the Jesuit priest be released on bail.

Lawlor, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights, said in her statement released on Thursday that defenders of human rights should not be put behind bars under the flimsiest of excuses. She demanded that all others arrested along with Father Swamy be released immediately as others who have been put behind bars without sufficient legal basis.

India has rejected international criticism over the handling of Stan Swamy’s case and has highlighted its commitment to human rights, their promotion and protection. In a terse statement in the face of international condemnation and widespread social media anger at the Modi government, the Ministry of External Affairs said Stan Swamy was arrested and detained by the National Investigation Agency on the back of the specific charges against him and that he had legal recourse and pointed out that the courts had been rejected by the courts, and that the government had nothing to do with it.

Father Stan was arrested on October 8, 2020 by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which alleged that the priest had Maoist connections and was working for the Communist Party of India (Maoist). In his defence, Swamy said evidence against him was fabricated and that he never conspired to foment violence.
