The Left leaders have come under severe criticism from the ruling BJP after attending an online event organized by the Chinese embassy to mark the centenary of the Communist Party of China on Tuesday.

The BJP has slammed the Left leaders accusing that the Left parties of having a long tradition of opposing the national interest and harbouring extraterritorial loyalties.

The Chinese embassy said that it had organised an online seminar on Tuesday to mark the centenary of the Communist Party of China where the Communist Party of India (Marxist)’s general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Communist Party of India’s Lok Sabha MP D Raja, DMK parliamentarian S Senthilkumar and All India Forward Block central committee secretary G Devarajan were presented in the virtual event hosted by Chinese ambassador Sun Weidong and CPC’s international department counsellor Du Xiaolin.

The Left leaders have attended the event at a time when India and China are closely watching each other over the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Indo-Pacific region.

Several BJP leaders including West Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh, MP Anil Jain and senior leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi have criticised the Left leaders for attending the event at a time when India is engaged in a border standoff with China.

Hitting out at the Left, Ghosh said he had seen communist agitations for decades and noted that they would raise slogans and carry out protests in support of Vietnam when the US had invaded it, and alleged that they also had loyalties towards Russia and China but not India.

Hitting back, Communist Party of India’s Lok Sabha MP D Raja, said no one should teach the communists about national interest. Questioning about the role of the BJP, Jana Sangh or RSS in the fight for India’s independence, Raja accused that by doing this, the BJP is diverting attention from its government’s failures.

Raja also alleged that the government itself is engaged with China on several issues. The government is participating in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS meetings and its economic cooperation with China is ongoing, he said.

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said that the virtual event organised by the Chinese embassy had nothing to do with India-China relationship and the Left have always supported the Government and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stand on China.

India and China were locked in a military standoff at multiple friction points in eastern Ladakh since early May last year.
