Geetanjali Shree has become the first Hindi author to win the International Booker Prize for Daisy Rockwell’s translated novel Tomb of Sand, which is originally Ret Samadhi. To be noted, the book was originally written in Hindi and is known as Tomb of Sand is the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious award.

In a tweet, The Booker Prizes said that they are delighted to announce that the winner of the 2022 International Booker Prize is Tomb of Sand bu Geetanjali Shree, a book that is translated from Hindi to English by Daisy Rockwell and is published by Tilted Axis Press.

Earlier, in an interview with Scroll, Daisy Rockwell said that it is her decision to translate only women because she is fed up with the male gaze, misogyny, and other things that come along with it. It is exhausting to tolerate these things as a reader, but far worse as a translator.

The Tomb of Sand is the first Hindi language book that was shortlisted for the £50,000 prize. The prize money will be split between Geetanjali and Rockwell.

What is the storyline of Tomb of Sand?

This book revolves around the story of an 80-year-old woman who is depressed after her husband’s death. Eventually, she overcomes her depression and decides to visit Pakistan to finally confront the past that she left behind during the Partition.

Geetanjali Shree after winning the Booker Prize said that she never even dreamt of the booker, and never thought that she could. What a huge recognition, she is amazed, delighted, honoured and humbled.

She further said that there is a melancholy satisfaction in the award going to it. ‘Ret Samadhi/Tomb of Sand’ is an elegy for the world we inhabit, lasting energy that retains hope in the face of impending doom. The Booker will surely take it to many more people than it would have reached otherwise, that should do the book no harm.

Frank Wynne, chair of the judging panel wrote that ultimately, they were captivated by the power, poignancy and the playfulness of ‘Tomb of Sand’, Geetanjali Shree’s polyphonic novel of identity and belonging, in Daisy Rockwell’s exuberant, coruscating translation.
