To prevent extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation, Twitter is limiting the number of tweets that different accounts can read each day, according to Twitte’s CEO Elon Musk in a post on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, on Saturday.

Elon Musk said that unverified accounts will be limited to 600 posts per day, with new unverified accounts being limited to 300, while verified users are temporarily restricted to reading 6,000 posts per day.

Musk said in a separate post on Twitter that the temporary reading restriction would soon increase to 8,000 posts per day for verified users, 800 posts per day for unverified users, and 400 posts per day for new unverified users. However, he did not specify when it would be put into effect.

As soon as Musk announced this internet got divided. Some section of users was praising Musk’s decision while were not happy with the decision. Taking to Twitter one verified user asked him why verified accounts have a limit. Another said, is there even any purpose of doing this? Others too shared their different opinions on Musk’s decision.

Prior to Friday, Musk characterised the decision by Twitter to make it necessary for users to have accounts on the social media network in order to access tweets a temporary emergency measure.

He claimed that at least a thousand businesses were extremely aggressively mining Twitter data, which was negatively affecting user experience.

He had previously indicated his displeasure with artificial intelligence companies using Twitter data to train their huge language models, including OpenAI, the company that owns ChatGPT.

Prior to Musk’s ownership, the social media network took a number of actions to win back advertisers that left Twitter and increase subscription revenue by incorporating verification checkmarks into the Twitter Blue program.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice DN Patel & Justice Prateek Jalan was hearing the Suo Motu Petition where it had taken cognizance of video of a Delhi resident who was searching for a hospital for his COVID-19 positive mother and running from pillar to post to get her admitted in the hospital.

The Court passed the direction after hearing Amicus Curiae as well as the counsel for the intervener.

“We also direct the Central Government as well as the Government of NCT of Delhi that testing shall be carried out by the Central Government as well as the State run hospitals, as far as possible, subject to availability of testing kits with priority be given to the persons approaching for test on the recommendation of a doctor,” directed the Court.

The Court said, “If any committee is appointed by Government of NCT of Delhi, the said Committee will also take note of this fact that there shall be real-time updation of the data on the mobile application developed by the Government of NCT of Delhi.”

The Court was informed by Amicus Curiae that the mobile application namely “Delhi Corona Mobile Application”, developed by Delhi Government, is not being updated regularly.

He also submitted that there is a mismatch of the facts and data released by the Government/Private hospitals in Delhi especially with regard to the availability of the beds and ventilators.

“Some of the hospitals run by the Central Government/ Delhi Government are not updating the data as well as the helpline numbers provided by the Delhi Govt not working properly,” said Amicus Curiae.

Senior counsel appearing for the intervener submitted before the court that suitable direction may be given to the Central Government and Government of NCT of Delhi to carry out tests of all those having apprehension of being exposed to Corona Virus.

The matter would now be heard on June 25.
