Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday made a major announcement saying that the electricity subsidy would be given to only those who ask for it from October 1. Speaking during a press briefing, Kejriwal said the Delhi government will now ask people whether they want to avail subsidy on electricity or not.

The announcement comes after State Power minister Satyendar Jain recently wrote to Union Power Minister RK Singh with the details of the coal shortage in several thermal plants supplying power to Delhi.

Currently, up to 200 units of electricity are free in the national capital and a 50 per cent subsidy is available for up to 400 units of monthly consumption. The AAP government had allocated Rs 3,340 crore for the electricity sector for the 2022-23 fiscal for its Special Electricity Subsidy Scheme.

The Union Minister responded to the letter and said the Delhi government is misleading the public with incorrect information about the electricity supply in the national capital.
