Delhi government on Thursday lifted the restrictions in the city which were imposed amid a surge in the Covid-19 cases. As the Covid-19 cases in the city are declining, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has lifted the weekend curfew and odd-even curbs for the shops. However, the night curfew will remain in place in Delhi.

The government has also removed various regulations levied in the capital regarding the number of guests in the marriage, a take on bars, restaurants, cinemas, and malls.

The decision to ease curbs was taken at a meeting between the Delhi government and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal to review the Covid-19 situation in the national capital. If the situation worsens, the restrictions will be re-imposed, said in a meeting.

Know what’s all open and shut in Delhi

  1. Bars, restaurants, cinema theatres and malls to operate at 50 percent capacity.
  2. Weekend curfew and odd-even regulations for shops have been lifted.
  3. Government offices to operate with 50 percent capacity.
  4. Schools will remain shut.
  5. Night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am will remain in place.
  6. The number of guests has been raised to 200 from 50.

However, no decision regarding the opening of schools was taken though Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia flagged worries about the prolonged school shutdown affecting the education and mental health of children.

The government has decided to discuss the reopening of schools in the next meeting. Experts suggested phased reopening of the schools – for classes 9-12 in the first phase, classes 5-8 in phase 2, and for classes 3 and 4 in the third phase.

However, the national capital saw a slight increase in the daily Covid-19 on Wednesday when 7,498 new infections were recorded which was 1,470 more from Tuesday’s figures when 6,028 cases were logged in Delhi. There are currently 38,315 active Covid-19 cases in Delhi. The positivity rate in the capital stands at 10.5 percent.

Even imposing fresh restrictions in the national capital, the Covid-19 cases are still on a surge. According to the city health department data, the positivity rate has increased to 25 percent, which is the highest since May 4 last year.

Considering the pandemic situation in the capital, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has directed all private offices to opt for work from home except those which are falling in the exempted category. Meanwhile, the private and government offices are working with 50 percent capacity. In view of the rising Covid-19 cases in the city, DDMA also suspended dine-in facilities at restaurants in the city and shut down bars, and allowed only takeaway and home delivery of food items.

In a meeting, DDMA stated that the rate at which Covid-19 cases, including Omicron variant, are increasing over the last few days with the positivity rate crossing 23 percent, there is a need for stricter restrictions.

DDMA in an order stated that it has been felt necessary that some more additional restrictions are required to be imposed in Delhi to contain the spread of the Covid-19 virus, including the highly contagious and transmissible Omicron variant.

The decision was made in response to an alarming increase in coronavirus and its Omicron variant cases in the country’s capital. More than 19,000 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the city yesterday, with 17 more deaths as a result of the infection.

Delhi has recorded 70 Covid-19 related deaths in the first ten days of this month, which is more than the city’s combined fatalities in the last five months.

Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi Chief Minister, declared on Sunday that there will be no lockdowns in the national capital as long as people follow Covid-19 protocols.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India reported 1,68,063 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. A total of 4,461 cases of the Omicron variant of coronavirus have been reported so far.

Delhi has witnessed a slight decline in Covid-19 cases today after reporting more than 20k cases consecutively for 2 days. The national capital has reported 19,166 new Covid-19 infections, over 3,500 less than yesterday. According to the city health department data, the positivity rate has increased to 25 percent, which is the highest since May 4 last year.

While 14,076 people have been recovered from the Covid-19, the capital has registered 17 new deaths in the last 24 hours. Delhi saw fewer cases on Monday with the number of tests conducted the previous day being lower than the day before. The city reported 22,752 new cases, which was the highest since May 1.

With the pace at which Covid-19 is spreading, the city is experiencing a surge in cases too. To curb the spread of the virus the authorities have issued restrictions in the city.

Due to the surge in Omicron cases, the Delhi government has imposed a night curfew from 11 PM to 5 AM. The curfew will begin tonight, December 27, 2021. Recently, on Sunday, 290 coronavirus cases were recorded, after which the Delhi Disaster Management Authority released a notice in which it was mentioned that the night curfew will be imposed from tonight.

Who all will be exempted from the night curfew restrictions in Delhi?

Pregnant women, patients, people who are out to buy essential items, and those travelling to or from the airport, ISBT, and railway stations will be exempted from the night curfew that will begin from the night of December 27.

Moreover, those who will be exempted from curfew will include government officials, those involved in emergency services, medical personnel, media persons, and other people who come in the frontline category.

The restrictions in Delhi will be imposed according to the alerts. Like if there is a yellow alert in Delhi then there will be a night curfew, closure of schools and colleges, shops of non-essential items, and there will be restrictions in seating capacity too.

What will happen if there is Red alert in Delhi?

If there is a red alert in Delhi then there will be total lockdown. Shops and establishments of non-essential goods and services and malls will be allowed to open between 10 AM and 8 PM based on the odd-even formula.

Restaurants will open with a seating capacity of 50 per cent from 8 AM to 10 PM. Bars will remain open but the timings will be from 12 am to 10 pm.

Apart from this, cinema halls, banquet halls, spas, gyms, outdoor yoga activities, amusement parks, stadiums, swimming pools, schools and colleges will not be allowed, if there is a yellow or red alert in Delhi.

A club in South Delhi’s Mehrauli was sealed on Thursday for organizing a gathering of 600 people at a time flaunting Covid-19 protocols amid Omicron scare in the national capital.

Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) on Wednesday issued the guidelines ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations to control the rising cases of Omicron. According to the guidelines, the restaurants and bars will only be allowed to operate with 50 percent capacity, however, the club violated the rules.

South District Magistrate showed the video of the club named Diablo where a large number of people were seen partying, drinking, and dancing without maintaining social distancing.

A restaurant named Diablo was found violating DDMA guidelines. There was overcrowding in the restaurant. FIR u/s 188, 269 IPC has been registered against the establishment at a police station, Mehrauli. The premises was also sealed, the police said.

As part of a series of inspections, a flying squad team of district South went for a surprise inspection at one of the renowned restaurants in Mehrauli where a large gathering of around 600 persons was found. A club had organised an event in complete violation of prevalent Covid-19 protocols, said Sonalika, District Magistrate (DM).

She further added that immediately, the crowd was dispersed by Tehsildar (Mehrauli) and the premises was sealed on spot for gross violation of DDMA guidelines, especially in wake of the emerging Omicron variant of Covid.

Continuing, she said that we have currently sealed the restaurant and took all the CCTV footage for investigation. Once, analyzing the footage, strict action will be taken against the restaurant owners.

DM South Sonalika urged all restaurants to follow the instructions in order to avoid becoming super-spreaders in the current COVID crisis.

Additional deputy police commissioner (south) Harsha Vardhan Mandava said a case has also been registered against the restaurant.
