The restaurant ‘Baba Ka Dhaba’ owner Kanta Prasad attempted suicide on Thursday by taking sleeping pills. The 81-year-old was admitted to Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital in an unconscious state, the police said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar Thakur said that at 11.15 pm on Thursday, information was received from the Safdarjung Hospital that Prasad was admitted there. The police reached the hospital and collected MLC (medico-legal case) which mentions the intake of alcohol and sleeping pills as the cause of unconsciousness. He is undergoing treatment.

Prasad’s wife said that she didn’t know what he ate, what he drank. They took him to hospital after he fell unconscious. Doctors have not told us anything. I don’t know what he was thinking, she told reporters.

Prasad had been depressed for the last few days. He had to close the restaurant he opened in December last year and was back to his old roadside stall as the cost of running the new establishment was around Rs 1 lakh while his income was only about Rs 30,000, his wife told a senior police official.

According to his son Karan, Prasad had taken drinks and sleeping pills. He fell unconscious at their shop, Karan’s wife Badami Devi told reporters.

Prasad came into the spotlight last year when a post on social media that showed him crying for his financial troubles, moved thousands online. The video went viral and provoked overwhelming support in the form of donations from across the country. The video was posted by YouTuber Gaurav Wasan.

Last year, he also made headlines when he lodged an FIR of cheating against YouTuber Gaurav Wasan for allegedly misappropriating money that was raised to help him and his wife.

With the donation money, Prasad opened a restaurant. Unfortunately, his business failed to take off and he was back to his roadside dhaba with his wife within a year.

Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad and the outfit’s Delhi unit chief Himanshu Balmiki were detained by Uttar Pradesh police near Aligarh in the early hours of Wednesday when they were enroute  to Hathras district. They were with the family of the 19-year-old Dalit gangrape victim, who died on Tuesday in Delhi’s Safdarjung hospital. Azad’s associates said on Wednesday that their leaders had been detained but the police denied any such detention.

On Tuesday, workers of Chandrashekhar’s Azad Samaj Party and Bhim Army had joined the protest outside Safdarjung Hospital to demand justice for the gangrape victim and her family. After a day, the body of the gangrape victim was forcibly cremated by the Uttar Pradesh Police in the early hours of September 30 in Boolgarhi village of Hathras district, against the wishes of her family.

Ravindra Bhati, a core committee member of Azad Samaj Party, said there is no clue about the two leaders’ location after reaching Jewar toll plaza to get on the lane to Tappal, Aligarh. He alleged the two were detained during the intervening night on Tuesday and Wednesday but police were not making it public.

Around 12.30 pm on Wednesday, dozens of Azad Samaj Party and Bhim Army activists reached the Tappal police station in Aligarh and demonstrated outside the police station. Bhati told the protesters that their representatives will meet senior police officials to inquire about Azad and Balmiki.

When the protesters contacted a senior Aligarh police official, he replied that he had no idea of any detention. The district police chief and some other senior officials could not be contacted as they have been under home isolation after contracting coronavirus.
