Daniil Medvedev stunned world no. 1 Novak Djokovic to win the US Open final on Sunday. With this win, Medvedev also shattered the Djokovic’s dream to win the Grand Slam and his 21^st Grand Slam title, which would have make him the only player to have 21 Grand Slam title in Men’s tennis putting ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Russian Medvedev thrashed Serbian Djokovic in straight sets by 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, which denied Djokovic the chance to win all Slam titles in a year. This is Medvedev’s first Grand Slam title in his career. Earlier this year Djokovic had defeated Medvedev in the Australian Open 2021 final.

Earlier on Saturday, UK’s Emma Raducanu also won her first Slam title, which makes Raducanu and Medvedev to become the first pair to have won 1^st Grand Slam title at US Open since Pete Sampras and Gabriel Sabatiny in 1990.

Djokovic had a golden chance to sweep all Slam titles in a single year for the first time since Rod Laver in 1969. Australian legend Laver was also in the stands to watch the game. This year’s Slam tournaments are over and Djokovic missed the chance to go ahead of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to have most no. of Grand Slam titles. Federer and Nadal both were out of this tournament due to injury.

The 25 year old and world no. 2 Medvedev, became the third Russian man to win a Grand Slam title after Yevgeny Kafelnikov in 1996 French Open and 1999 Australian Open and Marat Safin at the 2000 US Open and 2005 Australian Open.

Medvedev won his first Grand Slam title on the day of his third wedding anniversary. His wife Daria was also in the strands to witness him clinching the title. After winning the title Medvedev addressed his wife during the trophy presentation and said that, she has been his greatest support and motivation she always encouraged him to do extraordinary things.

World number 1 Novak Djokovic defeated German Alexander Zverev in a high voltage semi-final 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to book his final berth against second seed Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. If he wins the final, Djokovic would become the first man to win all four major titles in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969.

Djokovic is just a win away from his fourth career US Open title and 21^st overall grand slam title, which would make him the player with the most number of grand slam titles in men’s singles Tennis, surpassing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

At the moment, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are tied with 20 titles each. He also equalled Federer by getting to a 31st career slam final. 

If he wins Sunday’s final, Djokovic would become the first man to win all four major titles in the same year since Rod Laver in 1969.

Australian legend Laver was in the stands to watch Djokovic beat Zverev to avenge his Tokyo Olympics semi-final loss. Djokovic is also the oldest US Open finalist since Andre Agassi at 35 in 2005 and has a chance to be the oldest US Open champion since Ken Rosewall at 35 in 1970. 

While Medvedev, the 2019 US Open runner-up, defeated Canadian 12th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 to reach his third career slam final. World no. 2 Medvedev has said that he is going to throw everything he has and will not let Djokovic win the slam.

The US Open final can be seen as a rematch of February’s Australian open final, where Djokovic knocked out Medvedev in straight sets. Medvedev trails Djokovic 5-3 in their all-time rivalry. 

Now, all eyes are on US Open final on Sunday where world no. 1 Djokovic and second seed Medvedev will face each other. Ahead of the final, Djokovic said he will treat the next match like it is the last match of his career.
