Dr. Govind Nandakumar, Gastroenterology Surgeon, put his patient’s life first as he decided to run 3 km to the hospital to get past heavy traffic. On August 30, Dr. Nandakumar had a scheduled laparoscopic gallbladder surgery at the Manipal Hospital for which he was en route but was met with heavy traffic.

In the final stretch to the hospital, Dr. Nandkumar registered that he would not make it in time if the traffic flow keeps up like this. The Sarjapur-Marathahalli stretch, on a normal day, takes around 10 minutes to cover. However, on that day, it would have taken Dr. Nandkumar over half an hour to travel through the traffic.

While talking to the press, Dr. Nandkumar said he realized he was late when he checked Google Maps on his phone, which showed that it would take him another 45 minutes to reach the hospital. He then took the call to cover the distance on foot.

Dr. Nandkumar also told the press that his decision had a tangible result as the patient went through a successful surgery, and was discharged on time.

The patient’s health would have been in jeopardy if the doctor had not decided to step out of his car and run the whole stretch of Sarjapur-Marathahalli all the way to the hospital. The doctor, while recalling the incident, also told the press how having a driver and hitting the gym regularly had made him equipped for the task that was at hand.

Much to everyone’s surprise, according to the report, this was not the first time Dr. Govind Nandakumar had to take dramatic measures to attend to his patients, as he has done it before as well.

Dr. Nandkumar informed the press that it was not his first time that he had to make the journey on foot, as he had done this a few times previously as well while traveling to other parts of Bengaluru. He further stated how sometimes he even had to cross the railway lines.

Dr. Nandkumar also expanded on how he was not worried about the patient as he knew that his hospital has adequate staff and infrastructure to take good care of patients while also departing a caveat that the situation may not be the same for other small hospitals.
