Meghalaya becomes the first in the country to successfully deliver medicines via drones to remote primary health centers. a drone was deployed in the state’s West Khasi Hills district, 25 km away from the district headquarter.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the state has launched a pilot project to deliver India’s 1st Medicine Delivery via a Hybrid e-VTOL drone in Meghalaya from Nongstoin to Maweit PHC covering a distance of 25 km in less than 25 mins.

He further added that drone technology can change the future of healthcare. This is a one-of-a-kind initiative that will revolutionize the healthcare supply chain for an underprivileged population.

The tech support was provided by the innovation team Tech Eagle, Smart Village Movement in collaboration with the State Health Department, said the Chief Minister. According to sources, the deliveries were made using an e-VTOL (Virtual take-off and landing) Drone AquilaX2.

According to a senior health department official, the deployment of a drone to transport medicines was done on a trial basis, and today’s deployment was effective, reducing the time from 3 hours to less than half an hour.

Similarly, Jammu is also launching a pilot project for delivery medicines using drones in the undulating landscape of Jammu and surrounding areas from Saturday.

Jammu is currently focusing on the delivery of Covid vaccines and if the project is successful then it would be expanded for regular delivery of medicines in hilly and remote areas.

The drone is manufactured entirely by the scientists of Bengaluru’s National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL).
