As the new year celebration continues, the Mumbai Police have lodged cases against 283 people for driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol. As per the police officials, the police’s traffic branch organised a campaign against drunk driving in the 12-hour period ending at 8 am on Monday during which security personnel were deployed at various important locations in the city.

During the aforesaid campaign, the police caught 283 people for drunk driving, the official said. Cases were lodged against those people for violation of traffic-related norms and fines were also imposed on them, the official said.

Thousands of people gathered at the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty and other places on Sunday night to ring in the New Year amid tight security arrangements. Some also chose to visit religious places, including the famous Siddhivinayak and Mumbadevi temples, and churches.

On new year, the Central Railway operated four special suburban services in the Mumbai division on New Year’s Eve to cater to the rush of people who travel to south Mumbai and other places for celebrations. Out of the four specials, two ran on the mainline, and the other two on the Harbour line.

Additionally, police also made elaborate security arrangements to avoid any untoward incident. Reportedly, security check-ups were placed at various places in the city and some roads were barricaded. Two-wheelers riders without helmets were also fined.

Joint Commissioner (Law and Order) Satyanarayan Chowdhary said that 11,000 police personnel, 2000 officers, 22 deputy commissioners of police and 45 assistant commissioners of police were deployed for security.

He further added that some 20 platoons of the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF), 15 platoons of the Law and Order Reserve, Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad, and Quick Response Teams (QRTs) were in place to deal with emergencies and maintain peace.

Nearly 5,000 CCTV cameras kept an eye on celebrations, including at heavily patronised sites like Gateway of India, Marine Drive, and beaches among others, with live footage being monitored from the main and regional control rooms. In addition, over 1,200 traffic policemen and 150 officers were deployed on roads to monitor celebrations.

A 52-year-old man died in police custody after allegedly being thrashed by the cops inside a police station in Kochi, reports said on Monday. A police officer has been suspended in connection with the incident.

As per reports quoting eyewitness, the deceased, identified as Manoharan—a resident of Irupanam in Kochi— was thrashed by the policemen after he was taken into police custody for failing to stop his vehicle for inspection during a regular check on Saturday night. They claimed that Manoharan, despite being sober, was accused of drunk driving and taken to the police station and slapped by the police as soon as he removed his helmet. The cops also purportedly assaulted him inside the premises.

However, the police have refuted the allegations and claimed that Manoharan collapsed inside the Hill Palace Police Station after he was taken into custody for failing to stop his vehicle during a regular inspection on Saturday night.

They said that Manoharan collapsed in the police station and was taken to the Tripunithura Taluk Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Kochi where he passed away.

Refuting accusations of assault, the police said they have security camera footage as proof that the deceased was not thrashed by the policemen inside the police station premises.

The police have also cited the post-mortem report which states that Manoharan died of a cardiac arrest and also suffered from heart-related issues.

Meanwhile, the state human rights commission has also registered a case and directed the Kochi city police commissioner to conduct an investigation and submit a report in the incident.

Following the death, the family of the deceased and the Opposition parties protested outside the station.

A senior police official said that an officer of Sub-Inspector rank has been suspended and further investigation of the case is underway.
