Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is celebrated every year in India with great zeal and fervour. The Hindu festival is observed on the tenth day of the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin. This year, Dussehra will be celebrated on October 5.

The festival is celebrated after the nine-day festivities of Navratri and marks the triumph of good over evil. The auspicious festival not only marks Lord Rama’s win over Ravana but also the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama worshipped Goddess Durga for nine days for his victory before leaving for war against Ravana. The war lasted for ten days and on the tenth day, Lord Rama killed Ravana and the day is marked as the Dussehra or Ravan Dahan.

Dussehra: Shubh Muhurat

Dashami Tithi starts – 2:20 pm on October 4
Dashami Tithi ends – 12:00 pm on October 5
The timing of Shravana Nakshatra is from 10:51 pm, October 4 to 09:15 pm, October 05

The timings for Vijay Muhurat and Aparahna Puja are:
Vijay Muhurat – 02:07 pm to 02:54 pm.
Aparahna Puja Time – 01:20 pm to 03:41 pm.

Dussehra: Puja Vidhi

• On the day of Vijayadashami, take a bath in the morning and wear clean clothes.
• Worship Lord Shri Ram, Mata Sita and Hanuman Ji.
• At the auspicious time, go near the Shami plant and light a mustard oil lamp and chant the Shami Puja Mantra. After this, pray for success in all aspects.
• On this day, some people also worship weapons.
• For worshipping weapons, sprinkle Gangajal on a post and spread a red cloth over it.
• After that, place all the weapons on the red cloth and worship with flowers, akshat, roli, incense sticks etc.
• Along with this, worship Lord Shri Rama, Maa Saraswati, Lord Ganesha, Hanuman Ji, and Mata Durga.
• Ten balls of cow dung are also made on the day of Vijay Dashami. Plant barley in those cow dungs and light incense sticks.
