In an ill-fated incident, an e-bike battery explosion killed a 7-year-old boy who succumbed to his burn injuries. The incident took place inside his house in the Ramdas Nagar area of Vasai (East) of Mumbai, Maharashtra.

The incident took place when the child and his grandmother were sleeping and the battery of the electric bike was plugged into charging at the home. The battery of the electric bike exploded and the house caught fire. The boy died at the hospital while undergoing treatment. Manikpur Police have now initiated a probe by registering a case under Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in the matter.

The deceased, identified as 7-year-old Shabbir Ansari, had suffered over 80 per cent burns after an explosion in the detachment battery of an electric vehicle on September 23. The explosion took place while the vehicle was plugged into charging.

Ansari was sleeping with his grandmother in the living room. His father had plugged the battery charger in the living room at around 2:30 am and went to sleep in the bedroom. Shabbir’s mother was also sleeping in the bedroom. They were woken up at around 5:30 am by the sound of an explosion followed by a short circuit.

While the grandmother sustained minor injuries in the blast, Shabbir was seriously injured. He was rushed to the hospital where the boy succumbed to his injuries on September 30. The explosion was so fierce that not only the window panes got broken but also the house was badly damaged. Household appliances and gadgets also got destroyed in the accident. Firefighters reached the spot and took stock of the damage.

The family has not registered any complaint in the matter, and a case of accidental death has been registered, said the police, adding that, overheating might have caused the battery to explode and that a probe was underway.
