The medium-intensity earthquake of magnitude 5.7 Richter scale was reported in Delhi, NCR, Jammu, and Kashmir today at 9:45 am. The tremors were so strong in Jammu and Kashmir that led to the tilting of a minaret of the famous Sufi saint’s shrine at Charar-e-Sharief in Budgam district.

Due to the strong tremors reported across Kashmir, the crown at the shrine’s minaret tilted and lost its original shape. The shrine, however, has sustained no severe damage, and everything is being thoroughly examined from both inside and outside.

According to National Center for Seismology, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter Scale hit Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border Region at 9:45 am today. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 181 km.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported the moderate-intensity tremor hit at 9.45 am, with latitude 36.34 degrees north and longitude 71.05 degrees east as its coordinates.

The earthquake was reported 346 km north-northwest of Islamabad in Pakistan, 317 km southeast of Dushanbe in Tajikistan, 259 km northeast of Kabul in Afghanistan, 395 km northwest of Gulmarg, and 422 km northwest of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, according to the National Centre for Seismology.

People hurried out of their homes in fear when the earthquake struck. Kashmir is seismically located in an area prone to earthquakes, which have caused devastation in the past.

Apart from this, no other damage to the property or loss of life due to the earthquake has been reported yet.
