World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated every year on 28th of April. The day promotes the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally for safety and health at the workplace. This includes the development of a national policy and program and a system of oversight to enforce compliance with occupational safety and health legislation and policy.

Employers are responsible for ensuring that the working environment is safe and healthy. As workers, they are responsible for working safely and protecting themselves and not putting others in danger, knowing their rights and participating in the implementation of preventive measures.

History of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

World Day for Safety and Health at Work was first observed in the year 2003 by the International Labor Organization. That year, the International Labor Organization (ILO) began celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work to emphasize the prevention of accidents and diseases at the workplace.

Over the years, the day has become an important tool to raise awareness of how to make work safe, healthy and the need to raise the political profile of occupational safety and health. April 28 is also the International Day of Commemoration for the Dead and Injured Workers.

‘Act together to build a positive safety and health culture,’ is the theme for this year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2022. This subject emphasizes the need of encouraging employers to have a strong workplace health and safety culture in which everyone contributes to a safe and healthy workplace.

New and emerging occupational risks may be due to technological innovation or social or organizational change, such as new technologies and production processes such as nanotechnology, and biotechnology. Also, new working conditions such as higher workloads, reduced work intensity, poor migration conditions for jobs in the informal economy.

This is because, in some places, the value of human life outweighs the demands in this industrialized, mass-producing world. Therefore, the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work highlights the importance of occupational safety and health.

This means that for policymakers, it is their responsibility to frame laws and regulations that ensure employment.
