As the farmers’ protest against the Centre’s farm laws entered 83rd day, the farmers have planned a new strategy to hold massive rallies across the states to garner support for the agitation, decentralizing the protests at Delhi’s border.

From the thousands of farmers camping around Delhi borders at Ghazipur and Singhu, many of them are on their way back to the villages. Only half the number has remained across the sites. According to the farmers, it is part of their new strategy which is based on spreading the agitation.

Farmer leader Rakesh Tikait has planned to hold maha panchayats in Haryana, Maharashtra and Rajasthan in the next 10 days. He said, the protests will be carried out in the entire country, in all the districts, their people are spreading and meetings are being held in this regard. What if 10 lakh people gather here, would the government take back the contentious farm laws, he questioned.

Earlier the agitation was centralised considering the stubbornness of the government, but now farmer leaders are changing their strategy, so that the protest can reach every house in every village. The Maha Panchayats are being held at different locations, said Jagtar Singh Bajwa, spokesperson of Ghazipur Protest Committee.

The protest will not be concentrated to the borders, farmers in his field are equally part of it. The energy of the youth needs to be utilised for spreading the word, so that farmers can also carry out their work, added Bajwa.

Further, he said that whenever they need numbers at the borders, 1 lakh people can always arrive within the short notice.

The decentralization of the agitation is an important step. In states like Punjab, Haryana and other places, the agitations are now intensifying, rallies happening in Bihar. Farmers of eastern Uttar pradesh , Awadh were not able to come to the tractor hence smaller events are being held there, said activist Sandeep Pandey.

Despite several rounds of talks between the Centre and farmer leaders, the deadlock remains with neither side ready to back down. The farmers have laid siege to Delhi even as the government scrambles to find an amicable solution.

The government has projected the laws as major reforms in the agriculture sector that will remove the mandi system and middlemen and allow farmers to sell their produce anywhere in the country. However, the protesting farmers have argued that the new laws have no mention of minimum support price (MSP) and the mandis that will leave them at the mercy of big corporates.

Farmers protesting against the Centre’s three farm laws on Monday announced that they will march on foot towards Parliament from different locations on February 1, when the Union budget is scheduled to be presented.

A day before their mega tractor parade on the occasion of Republic Day in the national capital, farmer leaders talked about their plans to intensify their agitation during the press conference on Monday. The Kirti Kisan Union leader Dr Darshan Pal said that farmers on February 1 will march towards the Parliament on foot, against the three farm laws.

The march will be peaceful and the detailed programme will be declared in a day or two, said the farmer leaders. After the march ends, the farmers have been asked to stay on at the borders, said Balbir Singh Rajewal, president of Bharatiya Kisan Union.

Talking about their tractor’s march on Republic day celebration, the farmer leaders said it will be unique as ordinary people will become part of the celebrations. However, the Loni border saw tension between protesters and police as farmers tried to enter the national capital through an unapproved route.

The Delhi Police had given a no-objection certificate for the tractor rally on Republic Day, with 37 conditions, limiting the participants in the rally to 5,000 persons along with 5,000 tractors. However, nearly 2 lakh tractors have already become part of the procession today.

Thousands of farmers have been camping in and around the national capital for two months to put pressure on the government to withdraw three farm laws enacted by Centre. The farmers have been adopting different techniques since their protest launched in November.

The protesters had engaged in talks with the government several times. Recently, the 11th round of talks have been held but the deadlock is still continuing. The farmers have said they won’t stop protesting until the government rolls back what they call the black laws. While the Centre has  said that the laws won’t be repealed. It has however agreed to suspend its implementation for one-and-a-half years.
