Defying its drought-prone tag, Andhra Pradesh’s Anantpur was hit by flash floods owing to the heavy rainfall that poured down in the district on Tuesday night.

At least 300 flood victims were rescued from their houses, as many low-lying settlements got submerged in the rainwater and the overflowing drains.

Large amounts of rain fell in areas like Rudrampeta, Nadimvanka, and Adarsh Nagar, flooding the houses. The floods in district were are caused by overflowing nearby lakes. In comparison to March 2022, Singanamala lake received 60 per cent more rainwater in October 2022. The Chitravathi River is reportedly nearing capacity as well, said the reports.

Since Tuesday night, numerous colonies have been without electricity due to overflowing drainage systems that allowed entry of flood water into multiple colonies. Up to 300 individuals were evacuated from their homes by police and fire fighters and were rescued with boats, reports said.

The local MLAs Anantha Venkatarami Reddy, Topudurthi Prakash Reddy and MP Gorantla Madhav are constantly keeping a keen eye on the overwhelming situation. Upon their orders, facilities for drinking water and for food have been made at the relief camps.

Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO), Anantpur, GR Madhusudan has said that the tanks were entirely full prior to the rain but the canals began to overflow following the intense downpour. This resulted in the rural and town areas of Anantapur experiencing flash floods. In rural areas, six colonies were submerged; in urban areas, four colonies and three wards were impacted. The area that is most impacted is Rangaswami colony, RDO Madhusudan added.

The District Magsitrate has declared holiday for the schools and examinations of a few colleges have been postponed.

Sai Praneeh Burah, who famous by the name of Andhra Pradesh weatherman, in his tweet, wrote that in his nine years of blogging experience, he had never witnessed such floods in Anantpur. The tag of drought-prone district will now be removed as it rained in excess here in the past 4 years and this year highest rainfall was recorded here, he added.

It has been raining continuously for the last 2 days on the hills of Himachal Pradesh. Due to this, the Chakki Canal connecting Punjab-Himachal has been flooded. This flood caused complete destruction. The Chakki railway bridge collapsed due to heavy rainfall and flash floods on Saturday morning, August 20, 2022.

The narrow gauge railway bridge connecting Punjab and Himachal was washed away in the Chakki canal. After this, the Pathankot Joginder Nagar (Himachal Pradesh) rail route has come to a complete standstill.

Due to heavy rains in the hilly areas of Himachal Pradesh, the Chakki Padav bridge adjacent to Pathankot was washed away in the strong current of water. The incident happened late on Friday night.

Chakki Railway Bridge Viral Video

However, the railways had stopped the movement of trains about one and a half months ago, after the damage to the bridge due to rain.

Moreover, the Chakki bridge was built in 1929 during the tenure of the British Government. After two pillars of the bridge washed away in the rain, now it is difficult to restore the narrow gauge rail service for at least one and a half years. If the entire bridge has to be built, then it will take almost four years. The Chakki Khad railway bridge built during the British era between Joginder Nagar Railroad, Dalhousie Road and Kandwal railway stations collapsed.

Meanwhile, the repairing work has been started by the workers at Chakki Railway bridge, according to the reports.
