The mobile internet services in Meghalaya were suspended in 7 districts for 48 hours following a firing incident in Mukoh. At least 4 people including a forest guard were killed in this.

The mobile internet services will remain barred in seven districts for 48 hours from November 22, Tuesday.

Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangama stated during a press conference that 4 people, including Meghalaya residents and one Assam Forest Guard, have succumbed in the incident.

The incident took place at Mukoh area near Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday morning.

The reports said that 4 individuals were killed in a gun fight at the Assam-Meghalaya border on Tuesday morning after police stopped a vehicle that was reportedly smuggling timber. One of the deceased was a forest guard.

A crew from the Assam Forest Department reportedly intercepted the truck at the Meghalaya border in Moikrang in the West Karbi Anglong district at around three in the morning. Hot pursuit followed the truck’s attempt to elude capture. When the forest guards finally started firing at the car, one of the tyres was punctured.

The truck driver, the handyman, and a third individual were all captured and taken to Jiriking by the forest guards. The forest guards reported the event to the Zirikending police station and requested additional help.

Around 5 am, a large group of Meghalayans with “dao” (daggers) and other weapons gathered there, a senior police official said. 4 persons, including the forest guard, died as a result of the police team’s self-defence shooting after they arrived at the scene.

Bidya Singh Lehte, the deceased forest guard, and Abhimanyu, the injured forest guard, were both involved in the incident.

“Three members of the Khasi community as well as a forest home guard died in the incident and currently, the situation is under control, a policeman said.
